The US Open was first played on October 4, 1895, on a nine-hole course at the Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island as a 36-hole competition.
Ten professionals and one amateur entered and the inaugural tournament was won by Englishman Horace Rawlins. He received $150 cash out of a prize fund of $335, plus a $50 gold medal; his club received the Open Championship Cup trophy.
As of 2022, the U.S. Open awards a $17.5 million purse, the largest of all four major championships.

Who won the 2022 US Open?
Matt Fitzpatrick won the 2022 US Open which was his first major championship, finishing the tournament with a score of 274, six-under-par, a shot ahead of Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris.
This was incredibly Fitzpatrick’s first win on the PGA Tour. He had previously won the U.S. Amateur at The Country Club, in 2013.

The World Number 1 and recent 2023 Masters winner is the current US Open favourite at odds of 8/1. Rahm looks to win his third-ever major and second US Open with the first coming in 2021.
The Spaniard has been in excellent form this season from 11 events played he has 4 wins 7 Top-10s and 8 Top-25s. His best results in this event are a tie for third in 2019 and winning it outright in 2021. Expect him to be thereabouts again at this event with form and pedigree at this event working in his favour.
Rory McIlroy – 10/1
The World Number 3 is the joint second favourite in the market for the 2023 US Open at odds of 10/1.
The US Open has always been a good event for Rory from his 14 entries he has one victory winning it in 2011, 2 Top-5s, 7 Top 10s and 8 Top-25s. From his first 7 starts in 2023, he has 1 win and 1 2nd place finish.
Recently Mcllroy has not been in good form having being cut at both The Masters and The Players Championship, the two biggest events in the golfing calendar to date.
Scottie Scheffler – 10/1
The World Number 2 is the other joint second favourite for this year’s tournament. The 2022 PGA Tour Player of the Year has continued his strong vein of form into the 2023 season from his 12 starts he has two wins and 11 Top-25s.
Scheffler’s most recent victory came in The Players Championship winning it by five shots with a score of -17 under par. He has made three appearances at the US Open being cut in 2019, tied for seventh in 2021 and tied for second in 2022.
Colin Morikawa – 16/1
The World Number 13 has had a decent 2023, from his 12 events played he has one second-place finish and 6 Top-25s. In recent events, he has placed tied for 13th at The Players Championship, tied for 10th at The Masters and tied for 31st at the RBC Heritage.
Morikawa won his first appearance at the USPGA in 2020 and only his second major championship. His final round of 64 tied the lowest final round score shot by a PGA Champion thus becoming the third youngest golfer to win the PGA Championship when he won the event at age 23.
The American has made four appearances at the US Open being tied for thirty-fifth in 2019, cut in 2020, tied for fourth in 2021 and tied for fifth in 2022.
Justin Thomas – 16/1
The World Number 14 has not been in very good form this season from his ten events only having 2 Top-10s and 7 Top-25s being cut at The Masters and coming tied for 25th at the most recent event the RBC Heritage.
Thomas has been unspectacular at this event with his best finish being a tie for eighth in 2020 and from his six starts he has 2 Top-10s and 4 Top-25s. On his day he has the game to go close though and major championship pedigree behind him.
