2023 BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Favourites

Mary Earps – 2023 BBC SPOTY Favourite

Mary Earps is the favourite for the 2023 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award at odds of 8/11. Those odds imply that Earps has a 57.9% chance of winning this year’s award.

Earps is a goalkeeper and the number 1 for both Manchester United and England. She was a star for the Red Devils, helping them to a runner-up finish in the WSL, Champions League qualification and runner-up in the FA Cup.

Her performances for England were also admirable during the World Cup. Earps played every minute of all seven matches, keeping three clean sheets and receiving the Golden Glove for only conceding four goals during the tournament. She even saved a penalty in the final despite the Lionesses’ 1-0 defeat.

On 19 September 2023, Earps’ performances were recognised as she was named England Women’s Player of the Year for the 2022–23 season.

She also stood up for the rise of the women’s game this year. On 21 July 2023, Earps complained that fans at the World Cup could not buy a replica shirt with her name on it because supplier Nike had decided not to manufacture one, which subsequently saw that decision reversed.

Earps’ performances both on and off the field make her a worthy favourite for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Stuart Broad

The second favourite to win the 2023 BBC Sports Personality of the Year is Stuart Broad at 9/4. Those odds suggest that Broad has a 30.8% chance of winning the award.

The biggest challenger to Mary Earps? English Cricketer Stuart Broad! Australia may have retained The Ashes urn due to the series draw as they were defending champions, but Broad was brilliant throughout the series for the England team.

During the series, Broad, 37, rolled back the years with his performances. He took the last two wickets in the fifth test, which forced the series draw. Following those performances in The Ashes, he shocked the English public with the announcement of his retirement from the sport of cricket.

Thus the sentimentality factor will be running high as it will be the last time the public can vote for one of the country’s finest cricketers for the prestigious prize. Cricket has had the fourth most placing of all sports for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award with 12 behind Athletics (52), Football (23) and Formula One (18).

Frankie Dettori

Next in the betting to win the SPOTY in 2023 is Frankie Dettori at odds of 10/1. Those odds imply that Frankie Dettori has a 9.1% chance of winning the award.

Dettori, 52, would become the oldest winner of the prize were he to win the award this December. He would beat the record set by golfer Dai Rees, who won in 1957 at the age of 44. Frankie came third in the competition back in 1996 after riding all seven winners at Ascot.

Dettori is the most famous rider in the world since Lester Piggott and adored by the racing public. This year he rode a couple of winners on Champions Day at Ascot in October, including the Champion Stakes showcase race. He announced his retirement from the sport bowing out with a bang only to later do a U-turn as he will continue racing in the United States indefinitely.

A popular figure who will certainly have place credentials but his retirement U-turn may scupper his chances of winning the award this year.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson

Further out in the betting to win the 2023 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award is Katarina Johnson-Thompson at odds of 16/1. Those odds suggest that Katarina Johnson-Thompson has a 5.9% chance of winning the prestigious award this year.

Johnson-Thompson is another athlete who has captured the attention and hearts of the British public for her performances this past year.

Katarina suffered an Achilles injury soon after taking the 2019 heptathlon, that injury along with a calf tear ruled her out of the 2020 Olympics due to her needing surgery.

She considered retirement following an eighth-place finish at the 2022 World Championships, but she recovered brilliantly in 2023 to get through her mental struggles and take the Commonwealth title.
