2023 Coral Gold Cup Betting Favourites

Monbeg Genius

The 2023 Coral Gold Cup favourite is Monbeg Genius at odds of 7/1. Those odds imply that Monbeg Genius has a 12.5% chance of winning this year’s Coral Gold Cup.

The Jonjo O’Neill-trained seven-year-old is the son of Shantou and Ella Watson. The gelding’s career record to date is 5 victories and 2 third-place finishes from 10 runs.

Monbeg Genius most recently pulled up at Ascot at the beginning of the month after several mistakes including one which nearly dismounted the jockey.

Despite that, he is a classy horse on his day and before that run his last race was at the Cheltenham Festival back in March in the Ultima Handicap Chase. He came into that race on a three-race winning streak but was ultimately beaten by 2.25 lengths by winner Corach Rambler.

According to our traders, Monbeg Genius is the horse to beat in the big one at Newbury this December.

Complete Unknown

One of two joint-second favourites for the 2023 Coral Gold Cup is Complete Unknown at odds of 8/1. Those odds suggest that Complete Unknown has an 11.1% chance of winning the Coral Gold Cup.

In spite of what his name might tell you, this horse is far from an unknown quantity. Trained by Paul Nicholls, the seven-year-old son of Dylan Thomas and Silver Stream comes into the race with big claims.

Complete Unknown has an excellent career record of 5 wins, 5 runner-up finishes and 2 third finishes from 13 runs to date.

The horse returned to the track following Wind Surgery and a 190-day break on the 21st of October at Newton Abbot. In that outing, he topped the three-horse field by one length ahead of Might.

That run for Complete Unknown should serve as the perfect warm-up to this race and given his prolific record we expect him to be a serious threat in this one.

Mahler Mission

The other joint-second favourite for this year’s Coral Gold Cup is Mahler Mission who is also 8/1. Those odds imply that Mahler Mission has an 11.1% chance of victory at the 2023 Coral Gold Cup.

The John C McConnell-trained seven-year-old is the son of Mahler and Finnow Turkle. The gelding’s career record to date is 4 wins, 4 runner-up finishes and 2 third-place finishes from 12 runs.

Mahler Mission returned to the track this November at Carlisle for the first time in 236 days since falling during the National Hunt Challenge Cup in Cheltenham back in March.

At Carlisle, he finished second in a four-horse field, beaten 3.5 lengths by winner Thunder Rock. The signs are encouraging for this horse which last won at the beginning of the year in Navan.

Midnight River

Next up in the betting for the 2023 Coral Gold Cup is Midnight River who is a 10/1 chance. Those odds suggest that Midnight River has a 9.1% chance of winning the Coral Gold Cup this December.

The Dan Skelton-trained eight-year-old Midnight Rivers is the son of Midnight Legend and Well Connected Watson. The gelding’s career record to date is 7 victories, 1 runner-up finish and 5 third-place finishes from 19 excursions on track.

Midnight River returned to the track at the beginning of the month at Wetherby where the horse finished third in a four-horse field following a 203-day break from running. The eight-year-old’s most recent success came at Aintree back in April where he topped a fifteen-horse field, 1.5 lengths ahead of the runner-up Bowtogreatness.

City Chief

Further out in the betting is City Chief who is a 16/1 shot to win the 2023 Coral Gold Cup. Those odds imply that City Chief has a 5.9% chance of winning the big race at Newbury this December.

The Nicky Henderson-trained six-year-old is the son of Soldier of Fortune and Galant Ferns. This gelding’s career record to date is 4 victories, 3 second-place finishes and 1 third-place finish from 9 runs.

City Chief most recently ran at Ayr back in April. In that outing, he came 3rd in an eight-horse-field but a huge 11.5 lengths behind winner Sail Away. It should be noted that the horse was returning from a 77-day break from the track prior to that race and went into the race off the back of a two-race winning streak.

This six-year-old’s latest success came at Wetherby back in February when he beat three other horses including the runner-up O’Toole by five lengths.
