What is the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle?
The Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle race in Great Britain which is open to horses aged four years or older. It takes place annually at the Cheltenham Festival and was run for the first time in 1971.
Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle Distance & Obstacles
The race is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 2 miles and 5 furlongs (4,225 metres). During its running, there are 10 hurdles to be jumped.

This 6-year-old gelding got off to a strong start this season with a win at Gowran Park over a 2m trip. That victory came in dominant fashion too with 19L separating Ile Atlantique from the chasing pack as he justified 4/9 favouritism. This was the horse’s maiden win over hurdles.
The Tony Bloom-trained gelding’s only other outing over hurdles came in April 2022 at Auteuil in France. This horse made a mockery of an SP of 75/1 on his maiden voyage over obstacles to finish 3rd place, only 2¾L back from the winner.

Ile Atlantique is yet to race at Cheltenham.

This is a horse that can’t be ignored after a dominant outing at Gowran Park in a 19L win. There will be keen interest in his next outing at Naas.

The 4-year-old Jeriko Du Reponet is another with a faultless career record from his short racing career. Still, such has been his impression on track for trainer Nicky Henderson that he is already considered one of the favourites for the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle.
The horse returned to the track after a 265-day break after his maiden PTP victory in December 2023 to win on his first official outing. That run came at Newbury where he beat 7 other horses, to finish 3¼L ahead of 2nd-placed King William Rufus.

Jeriko Du Reponet is yet to run at Cheltenham.

Jeriko Du Reponet looks like another promising horse. With 2 wins from 2 outings over hurdles, both as an odds-on SP favourite, he promises to be a serious contender this March at Prestbury Park.

The 6-year-old, trained by Henry De Bromhead, has caught the attention of horse racing fans with his 2 wins from 2 outings over hurdles this season.
In his season debut in November, this gelding topped a 22-horse strong field at Naas. With Rachael Blackmore on the saddle, he eased to a 5½L victory over a 2m4f trip.
Next time out we saw Slade Steel at Navan where he scored his 2nd win of the season. This time over a longer trip of 2m4f on Heavy ground with Blackmore once again in the saddle.

Slade Steel has never run at Cheltenham.
Verdict
A perfect start to his career over hurdles combined with the fact that Rachael Blackmore would likely be the jockey at Cheltenham makes Slade Steel a very interesting prospect at his current odds.

The horse was most recently a Non-Runner in October 2023 at Punchestown due to a Stone Bruise which means that we are still waiting to see A Dream To Share’s debut over hurdles.
The horse’s last victory came at Punchestown in April when he won over the 2m½f distance, coming 3¾L ahead of runner-up Tullyhill.

A Dream To Share has already Cheltenham winning form in his young career. He won the Weatherbys Champion Bumper back at the festival last March in just his fourth-ever race.
Verdict
A Dream To Share looks a really special sort but injuries could hamper his preparations for this year’s Cheltenham Festival. He is also still an unknown quantity over hurdles as we await his hurdling debut.
