What is the Cheltenham Cross Country Chase?

The Cross Country Chase is a National Hunt steeplechase in Great Britain open to horses aged five years or older.

It was originally run as a handicap race before being changed to a conditions race from the 2016 running and takes place each year on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Cheltenham Cross Country Chase Distance & Fences

The race is run on the Cross-Country Course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 3 miles and 6 furlongs (3 miles 6 furlongs and 37 yards, or 6,069 metres). Horses will have to navigate thirty-two obstacles over the trip.

2024 Cheltenham Cross Country Betting Favourites

Conflated

Odds

One of two co-favourites to win the 2024 Cheltenham Cross Country Chase is Conflated at odds of 3/1. Those odds imply that Conflated has a 25% chance of winning the 2024 Cheltenham Cross Country Chase.

Pedigree

The nine-year-old is trained by Gordon Elliot and the son of Yeats and Saucy Present.

Career Record

He currently has a career record of 7 victories, 4 runner-up finishes and 7 third-place finishes from 30 outings on the track.

Form

His last outing came at Down Royal in November 2023 where the horse finished third in a field of four but just one and a quarter lengths behind winner Gerri Colombe. This was a considerable improvement from his last-place finish the month before in Punchestown.

The horse’s most recent success came on the 28th of December 2022 over a 3-mile trip, returning after 53 days away from the track to top a seven-horse-field by five lengths.

Verdict

One to keep an eye out for after giving a good account of himself in last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup with a third-place finish.

Delta Work

Odds

The other co-favourite to win the 2024 Cheltenham Cross Country Chase is Delta Work at odds of 3/1. Those odds suggest that Delta Work has a 25% chance of winning this race.

Pedigree

Delta Work is another member of the Gordon Elliot stable and is a son of Network and Robbe.

Career Record

His overall career record is 12 victories, 3 runner-up finishes and 8 third places from 35 outings on track.

Form

The horse most recently finished a disappointing sixth from a field of thirteen at Cheltenham in November 2023. That made it three races without a success for the horse which means his last victory came in the 2023 iteration of the Cheltenham Cross Country Chase.

Verdict

As the back-to-back Cheltenham Cross Country Chase champion it’s fair to say that this is clearly a race Delta Work enjoys.

It will certainly be one targeted by Gordon Elliot again next year. If Elliot can train the winner again this time he will go outright for most training successes in the event with six.

Galvin

Odds

The third favourite for the 2024 Cheltenham Cross Country Chase is Galvin at 7/2. Those odds imply that Galvin has a 22% chance of being crowned the next Cheltenham Cross Country Chase winner.

Pedigree

The nine-year-old gelding is another trained by Gordon Elliot and the son of Gold Well and Burren Moonshine.

Career Record

He boasts a solid record with 13 wins and 5 runner-up finishes from 27 excursions on the track.

Form

The horse’s most recent outing on track was at Cheltenham in November 2023. There he placed eighth from a field of thirteen in a cross country race, twenty-one lengths back from winner Foxy Jacks. However, it’s worth noting that this was the gelding’s first run in 216 days so you’d expect him to be sharper next time out.

Verdict

Galvin was runner-up in this race back in March, beaten two and a half lengths by Delta Work but still remains a major contender to go one better in 2024.

Minella Indo

Odds

Next up in the betting is Minella Indo who is an 8/1 chance to win the Cheltenham Cross Country Chase at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival. Those odds suggest that Minella Indo has an 11.1% chance of 2024 Cheltenham Cross Country Chase glory.

Pedigree

The ten-year-old gelding is trained by Henry De Bromhead and the son of Beat Hollow and Carigeeen Lily.

Career Record

Minella Indo’s career record is a consistent 8 victories, 5 runner-up finishes and 3 third-place finishes from 22 races.

Form

The ten-year-old’s most recent outing on track was at Down Royal in November 2023 where he finished last from a field of four, twenty-one lengths back from winner Gerri Colombe. This was a disappointing showing following the horse’s victory in Punchestown the previous month.

Verdict

A consistent chaser who has performed well at the Cheltenham Festival in the past. Every chance of being there or thereabouts in this race.

Foxy Jacks

Odds

At 10/1 to win the 2024 Cheltenham Cross Country Chase is Foxy Jacks. Those odds imply that Foxy Jacks has a 9.1% chance of winning the 2024 Cheltenham Cross Country Chase.

Pedigree

The nine-year-old gelding is trained by MF Morris and the son of Fame And Glory and Benefit Ball.

Career Record

His career record is 5 victories, 6 runner-up finishes and 3 third place finishes from 42 runs.

Form

Foxy Jacks’s most recent showing was at Cheltenham in November 2023 when he won a cross country race over the three-mile and five-and-a-half-furlong distance. He topped a thirteen-horse field to finish a tight 1¼-quarter length ahead of runner-up Latenightpass.

That was the horse’s first outing in 58 days after coming third at Listowel back in September.

Verdict

Has major claims after his win in the Cross Country Handicap Chase at Cheltenham’s November meeting. Worth noting that he will likely carry a similar weight to the favourites at the festival in March unlike in November’s handicap where he carried a lighter weight.
