England Stars Drop Out Of SPOTY Race As Cavendish Rides To Front

The chances of any of England’s Euro 2020 stars being crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year have been abandoned after their penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the final at Wembley.

Raheem Sterling had plummeted into 4/1 after hitting the net three times on the Three Lions’ run to the final but has now been eased back out to 20/1, while captain Harry Kane had been as short as 3/1 favourite before drifting back out to 22/1 this week.

There are contrasting fortunes in the market for Mark Cavendish, who is on course to win his second Green Jersey at the Tour de France having equalled Eddie Merckx’s record of 34 stage wins in the race.

The Manxman, who may get a chance to grab the all-time record in his own right before the race finishes in Paris,

has been backed all the way into 7/4 favourite from 200/1 before the Tour started to win the award for the second time having picked up the trophy in 2011.

Cavendish faces hot competition however ahead of the Olympics in Tokyo, with gold medal hopefuls Dina Asher-Smith and Adam Peaty right in the mix at 3/1 and 14/1 respectively.
