Kerry vs Galway All-Ireland Football Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

Football legend Diarmuid Connolly says the All-Ireland Final of Kerry vs Galway is the perfect stage for a certain player at Croke Park.

The Dublin legend is backing David Clifford, who has played a starring role in Kerry’s run to the final and will start Sunday’s showdown the odds-on favourite to be crowned Senior Football Championship Player of the Year.

“Some may say David Clifford had a quiet enough day in the semi-final,” Connolly told BoyleSports.

“But he still scored six and every time he got the ball in his hands, he looked like he was going to do something dangerous. This match-up will be key for Galway, because if Clifford gets going, he could put 1-6 or 1-7 on the board in a short space of time.

“I think man of the match has him written all over it. He’s the stand-out guy in this Kerry team and the All-Ireland Final is made for him.”

Connolly has also warned Galway that nullifying Clifford may not be enough if they are to get their hands on Sam Maguire for the first time since 2001.

“You have to look at Paudie too, who was man of the match against Dublin,” he added.

“It’ll probably be Sean Kelly or Liam Silke picking up David Clifford, but you can’t just focus on one guy, because the rest of them will start playing ball.

“Connor Gleeson will have to get the ball off quickly to put pressure on the Kerry midfield and half forward line. If they go short, Kerry could just swamp them and that’s not what Galway need.

“They need quick balls into Damien Comer to get those scores.”

Connolly adds: “If they start well, then Comer and Walsh, as well as Cillian McDaid and Paul Conroy in the middle of the park, are the lynchpins who will drive them forward.

“Comer at 9/1 for first goal of the match looks good value. He was a beast against Derry, he’s top of the ground at the minute and he’ll take a bit of watching.

“Tom O’Sullivan will probably mark Shane Walsh and he’s a tenacious man-marker, so Walsh will have it all to do.

“I think Kerry are justified favourites, there might not be much value in their short price, but I think they could win this by more than four at the better price of even money.”

The trends suggest Galway would need a four-point start to overcome Kerry, who continue to enjoy the overwhelming majority of support in the betting.

Kerry are the red-hot favourites to be crowned All-Ireland Senior Football champions.

Jack O’Connor’s men were cut into 1/3 from 6/5 to get their hands on Sam Maguire for the first time since 2014 shortly after their narrow victory over Dublin in the semi-finals.

But consistent support from the south west means the Kingdom have now been trimmed further into 2/7, while Galway’s chances of an upset have been eased slightly to 5/2 from 2/1.

The Tribesmen do however boast the favourite in the betting to finish the Championship as top points scorer, with Shane Walsh an odds-on 4/5 shot to reel in Derry’s Shane McGuigan, who is four points clear of Walsh having notched a total of 34 during the Oak Leaf County’s run to the semi-finals.

Sean O’Shea, who stepped up with the decisive score with the last kick of the game against Dublin in the semi-final, needs nine points in the final to overtake McGuigan and is rated a 4/1 shot to be top scorer of the season come the final whistle.

O’Shea is also in the running for Player of the Year as the 11/2 second favourite, although that award is odds-on at 8/13 to go to Kerry teammate David Clifford.

We’ve had to cut them even further this week into 2/7 from 1/3, so they’re still being well backed even at odds-on prices and it’s going to take quite an upset to deny them.
