Aston Villa v Brighton Preview

Aston Villa’s Form

Following the removal of Steven Gerrard as Head Coach back in October and the appointment of Unai Emery back in November 2022 Aston Villa have been in sensational form. Aside from Manchester City (71), Villa have won the joint second-most points in 2023 with (55) alongside Arsenal and Liverpool.

The club’s pre-season record was three wins, three draws and one defeat with their victories coming against Fulham, Lazio and Valencia. Villa strengthened their squad during the summer also with the only departures of note being ageing stars or fringe players. They’ve signed the likes of Tielemans, and Torres on transfers and Zaniolo and Lenglet on loan.

However, they started the opening game with a shocking 5-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle conceding an XG of 3.3 while scoring an XG of 1.8. Since that defeat, they have four wins from five games including 0-1 most recently against Chelsea. Their other defeat was 3-0 against Liverpool. Aston Villa remain a seriously dangerous side this season under Unai Emery.

Brighton’s Form

Brighton is a club on the up, last season they had a phenomenal season shocking plenty with not only their performances but their consistency. They would finish the season in a more than respectable sixth place finish, alongside a semi-final FA Cup finish. They were always going to be a club to watch this season.

Following last season’s campaign the Seagulls were expected to be gutted in the off-season for some of their prized assets. And gutted they were as Alexis Mac Allister signed for Liverpool on an undisclosed fee, Moisés Caicedo has gone to Chelsea for £100m while keeper Robert Sanchez also left for Chelsea for £25m.

Despite these departures, Brighton still has plenty of assets at the club and they’ve continued with their excellent recruitment bringing in the likes of Joao Pedro from Watford, Mahmoud Dahoud from Dortmund and Milner from Liverpool.

Brighton have picked up where they left off last season winning four out of five league games, their one defeat coming 1-3 against West Ham. Despite the added pressure of their European exploits this season, they show no signs of stopping in the league where they’re currently third in the table.

Aston Villa v Brighton Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Aston Villa 1-1 Brighton

Two in-form sides who should be very equally matched. Home advantage could prove key for Aston Villa even though their head-to-head record is very misleading and skewed toward Aston Villa.

Brighton are a far better side these last two-seasons from their transfer policy of choosing wisely. The Seagulls are the top-scorers in the league with eighteen goals scored and Aston Villa have one of the worst defences in the division statistically with ten conceded.

This screams scored draw me.

Best Bet: Draw and Over 1.5 Goals @ 16/5
