Champions League Round of 16 Preview

Liverpool vs Real Madrid

This tie is the pick of the bunch from the Champions League round of 16 draw. The defending Champions of Europe Real Madrid will take on 2019 and six-time European champions Liverpool. It’s almost a shame really that one of these sides will exit the competition so early but what a matchup this is for us to enjoy.

Liverpool qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League after finishing second in their group to Napoli. The English side bounced back from a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Napoli in the first group game to win the rest of their games.

Real Madrid finished top of Group F ahead of RB Leipzig to earn their spot at this stage of the competition. The Spanish team were beaten by Leipzig and were held to a draw by Shakhtar Donetsk but in the end did just enough to claim top spot.

PSG vs Bayern Munich

PSG and Bayern Munich are set to go head-to-head again in what is a rematch of the 2020 Champions League final. On that occasion it was Bayern who were victorious courtesy of a Kingsley Coman goal.

Paris have not been overly impressive in their Champions League campaign so far this year after finishing 2nd behind Benfica in their group. With that being said, they are still unbeaten after their two draws with Benfica went along with four wins against Juventus and Maccabi Haifa.

Bayern on the other hand were very impressive in their Champions League group games as they topped Group C with six wins from their six games. This included victories over Inter Milan and Barcelona. The Germans don’t have the attacking talent of PSG but they seem to play better as a unit which should make this matchup a fascinating watch for football fans.

AC Milan vs Tottenham

Tottenham have been drawn against AC Milan of Italy in the Champions League round of 16. Manager Antonio Conte will be plenty familiar with AC Milan having managed rivals Inter Milan before he signed with Spurs.

Conte guided his team to top spot in Group D during the group stages of this competition in what was a tight race that saw the team win three, draw two and lose one of their group games.

AC Milan are on the rise again after an unsuccessful past decade in European football. This club have been crowned European Champions seven times but haven’t won it since 2007. Milan finished second in Group E behind Chelsea to qualify for the knockout stages.

Borussia Dortmund vs Chelsea

2021 Champions League winners Chelsea have been handed a tough round of 16 opponent in the form of Jude Bellingham’s Borussia Dortmund side.

Chelsea have been going strong in this competition under new manager Graham Potter. They topped Group E ahead of AC Milan with 13 points from six games.

Borussia Dortmund have also performed well in Europe this season with a second-place finish behind Man City in group E earning them a spot in the Champions League knockout stages. They managed to earn a draw against tournament favourites Man City in one of their group matches which shows that they will be able to put it up to Chelsea in this tie.

RB Leipzig vs Manchester City

The reigning Premier League champions Man City have been tasked with German side RB Leipzig in the round of 16. The English champions are Champions League favourites at 13/8 and will be strongly favoured to overcome Leipzig in this tie.

City went unbeaten in Group G to earn top spot over Borussia Dortmund with 14 points. Guardiola’s team look very hard to beat right now with Erling Haaland racking up goals up front and Kevin De Bruyne pulling the strings in midfield.

RB Leipzig were in Group F and they finished 2nd in the table to qualify for this stage of the Champions League. The highlight of the competition so far for the German side was there 3-2 victory over last year’s Champions League winners Real Madrid.

The Rest Of The Champions League Round Of 16 Ties

Club Brugge of Belgium have been drawn against Benfica of Portugal. Benfica could be a team to look out for in this competition as they topped PSG in Group H to qualify for the knockout stages.

German side Eintracht Frankfurt will play Napoli from Italy. The Italian club finished ahead of Liverpool in the group stages to get this far and could be an interesting dark horse to win the trophy.

Inter Milan of Italy and Porto from Portugal will play each other for a spot in the quarter-finals. This tie is a tough one to call with both teams performing well in their respective groups to get this far.
