Champions League Group C Preview

Napoli

Napoli come into this year’s off the back of an incredible 2022/23 season. The club won Serie A which was their first league title in 33 years. They also reached the quarter-final of the Champions League before being eliminated by AC Milan (which plenty would’ve been disappointed with after tipping them for success).

Much will be expected of Napoli this season as they look to retain their league title and go even further in Europe.

In the summer they sold star centre back Kim Min-Jae to Bayern Munich for €50,000,000 and he will be a colossal loss to the club this season. Natan (22) has been brought in from Red Bull Bragantino for €10,000,000 as his probable long-term successor but his transition into the starting team hasn’t happened quite yet.

Giacomo Raspadori is the headline name coming in from Sassuolo for €36,000,000 but there are plenty of unknown and promising quantities brought in also.

Napoli are 25/1 to win this year’s Champions League, 2/1 to win Group C and 2/7 to qualify out of the group stage.

Real Madrid

The club had a solid season last year coming second in La Liga, runners-up in the Supercopa de Espana, winning the Copa del Rey, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup and a Semi-Final appearance in the Champions League. Even more will be expected of the club this year and they look well placed to do so with all their young talent.

It was another summer of change in Madrid, with the departures of Asensio, Benzema, Hazard and Ramos (amongst others). Real are always going to have to recruit wisely to bolster their squad to a level which can meet the mammoth expectations put on them.

However, they have largely recruited shrewdly with Garcia signing from Vallencano, Güler from Fenerbahçe along with Joselu and Kepa signing on loan.

There was also the acquisition of  young English superstar Jude Bellingham from Dortmund. The young star midfielder has started his career in Madrid on fire with five goals and one assist in his opening four matches. He very much looks like the man to take them to another level this year.

Real Madrid are 15/2 to win the tournament, 4/7 to win Group C and 1/9 to qualify out of the group stage.

Sporting Braga

Following their third place finish in the Portuguese league last year Braga qualified for the Champions League third qualifying round. There they beat TSC 3-0 and 1-4 to get to the playoff round. They then booked their Champions League Group Stage place with a 0-1 and 2-1 win over Panathinaikos.

During the transfer window, they recruited largely from the lower divisions across Europe although the free transfer of João Moutinho (36) from Wolves and José Fonte (39) from Lille will add experience and steel to their side. The re-signing of Bruma following his loan last season will be an important signing for them also.

Braga can be gotten at a massive 500/1 to win the tournament, 10/1 to win Group C and 7/2 to qualify out of the group stage.

Union Berlin

Union Berlin’s rise as a football club continued last year again with a fourth-place Bundesliga finish and DFB Pokal Quarter-Final appearance. The next big step in the club’s rise will not only be qualifying for Europe but being competitive in the Champions League also.

There were no major departures from the club during the summer and not only did they consolidate their core team they also bought well. Berlin have brought in plenty from European elite clubs such as Chelsea, Inter Milan, Monaco and Juventus. Their signings that look most interesting on paper is Aaronson from Leeds on loan, Gosens from Inter Milan, Volland from Monaco and Bonucci from Juventus.

Union Berlin are 100/1 to win the tournament, 12/1 to win Group C and 3/1 to qualify out of the group stage.

Game of the Group

Napoli vs Real Madrid – October 3rd

Player to Watch – Jude Bellingham

How could it be anyone else? This kid is a bonafide superstar at just 20 years young.

His start this season at Real Madrid looks to be just the beginning of what promises to be an excellent career at the Spanish giants.

Enjoy him playing the Champions League because the vision of him in an England jersey will be even more tainted when you realise he could’ve played for Ireland.

Champions League Group C Prediction

Real Madrid are Champions League specialists and I think they will win this group despite the tough test Napoli will pose them. Union Berlin looks stronger than Braga and I think they will them to the Europa slot.

1st – Real Madrid

2nd – Napoli

3rd – Union Berlin

4th – Braga

2023-24 Champions League Format
