Cork v Kilkenny Preview

Cork’s Form

Cork entered the 2024 season following a 2023 which saw them top Division 1 Group A with a record of 4 wins and 1 draw in a group which included Limerick, Galway, Clare, Wexford and Westmeath. They would then lose in the Semi-Final 0-22 to 2-22 against Kilkenny.

Cork underwhelmed in the Championship as they failed to get out of the Munster Championship with 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses.

The Rebels opened their league campaign last weekend losing 1-25 to 2-19 to Clare and will be looking to earn their first win of the season against old rivals Kilkenny.

Kilkenny’s Form

Kilkenny came into the 2024 season following a 2023 which saw them finish in second spot in Division 1 Group B with a record of 4 wins and 1 loss. Their group included Tipperary, Waterford, Dublin, Antrim and Laois.

In the semi-final against Cork they were comfortable winners on a scoreline of 0-22 to 2-22. However, they were disappointingly dispatched 2-20 to 0-15 against Limerick in the league final.

In the Championship last season the Cats finished second in Leinster’s round robin with a record of 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. That earned them a spot in the Leinster Final against Galway who they beat courtesy of a last second goal, 4-21 to 2-26 was the full-time score.

Kilkenny then beat Clare in the All Ireland Semi-Final 2-22 to 1-22 before losing the final against Limerick 2-15 to 0-30.

Kilkenny opened their league campaign with a 2-16 to 2-16 draw against Wexford and so will also be looking to win their first game of 2024.

Key Players To Watch

Patrick Horgan

Cork captain and talisman Patrick Horgan might be due to turn 36 next May so this might be his last season to land that elusive All-Ireland success that his talents so richly deserve. He will be Cork’s primary scoring threat on Saturday particularly for his expert free-taking ability.

T.J Reid

Another veteran of the game who has continued to age like a fine wine is T.J. Reid who turned 36 last November. His total of 2-73 total for Kilkenny last season made him a top-scorer in the Championship and another prime season seems to be in store before he eventually hands up his boots.

Cork v Kilkenny Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Cork 0-16 Kilkenny 3-16

Cork showed signs last season in particular that they were back to building something special in the county following their league performances before underwhelming in the Munster Championship.

Kilkenny might not be the quantity they once were which dominated Hurling for the best part of two decades but they remain a serious threat in the League and Championship.

I think Kilkenny are being overlooked here and I fancy their chances against Cork.

Best Bet: Kilkenny Win @ 13/8
