Coventry City Boss Mark Robins Talks New Signings

Coventry City manager Mark Robins says he wants to recruit four more players before the transfer window closes to improve the balance of his squad.

Speaking to Leon Blanche from BoyleSports this week, Robins admitted the summer market has been problematic, but insisted more incomings are required before the Sky Blues resume in front of returning fans this season at their home stadium.

He said: “It’s been very difficult this summer, the market has changed and it has been a lot slower. The Premier League clubs haven’t really got going and they tend to kick off activity not only in this country, but around Europe.

“So we’re still waiting on that and what impact the pandemic has had and from our perspective it has been slow because of the knock-on. We’ve managed to get permanent signings over the line, but I always want to build and get better and for me we still need four players.

“If I can get those four players in, then I’ll be a lot happier than I am at this moment in time. I’ll just push as much as I can because the balance of the squad needs to be a little bit better, we still haven’t got any left wing backs after we lost Sam McCallum and Ryan Giles, so we’re still looking at that position and others.”

Despite claiming that he won’t be setting any targets for the upcoming campaign, Robins also said that he is looking beyond Championship survival ahead of kick-off at home to Nottingham Forest on August 8th.

“Last year was about staying in the division and trying to consolidate, but that isn’t really what we’re looking at and that isn’t a goal we’ll be setting,” added the manager.

“If we survive again it’s a success and anything above the 55 points we got last season will be a brilliant effort, but if we can do that and move towards the top ten then anything can happen, because you can go on a decent run and get closer to those top six places.

“We don’t set targets like that, but we will look at what level of performance we can achieve and as confidence builds you can get some momentum. If we can get to that point, there is more experience in the squad this year than there was last.”
