Déise Punter Lands €5,000 Profit After Four Teams Get Flying Starts
A shrewd punter in Waterford found a clever way to find a fortune at the weekend when a flutter on the football saw them pocket a tidy five-figure sum.
The anonymous Déise native picked just four teams out in their local BoyleSports shop but invested a confident €80 on all four to be leading at half-time despite starting with one or two-goal handicaps.
Having been backed with a 2-goal handicap at 5/4, Russia breezed into a 4-0 half-time lead against minnows San Marino to get the ball rolling, while Armenia (-1) at 15/18 also landed when they went into the break 2-0 up against Lichtenstein.
When Drogheda (12/5) raced into a 3-0 against Athlone Town they beat a -1 goal start to leave the footy enthusiast with a massive sweat on the evening match between Greece and Italy.
They needed Italy to beat a 1-goal handicap by half-time but the Azzuri hit three goals in a 10-minute spell to go 3-0 up and trigger the tasty payout.
With all four selections combined in several bets, the canny punter walked off with an impressive haul of €5,089.78
