The fixture list could have been much kinder to the Candystripes with an away trip to Dundalk already under their belts, although Ruaidhrí Higgins’ men will be content to begin their campaign with a point after falling behind twice at Oriel Park last week.

Debutants Steven Bradley and Mark Connolly put the Lilywhites in the ascendency twice, but quick equalisers on both occasions from Joe Thomson and Jamie McGonigle kept the visitors in the hunt and the latter will be disappointed not to steal all three points having been denied by the woodwork twice in the closing stages.

It was a much more comfortable opener for Shamrock Rovers at home, with Sean Hoare, Danny Madroiu and Graham Burke all on the scoresheet in a 3-0 victory over UCD in Tallaght.

That immediately put the Hoops on the front foot and they have already been backed into 4/7 from 4/6 in the outright betting for a third Premier Division title in a row.

The chances of the Candystripes landing their first Premier Division title since 1997 remain at 4/1 as they had been at kick-off against Dundalk last week, but they could be winless after two matches according to the odds for Friday’s clash.

Stephen Bradley’s side are hot favourites at 20/21 in the match betting to cement their strong start by taking all three points back to the capital, while Derry City will have to overcome odds of 3/1 leapfrog their opponents in the early standings.

One thing that is expected on the menu is goals, with seven across both opening matches involving the pair last weekend.

There have also been nine scored in the previous two head-to-heads, including the most recent meeting at the Brandywell which Rovers won 4-2 despite finding themselves 2-0 down just after the half-hour mark.

It’s 20/23 for both teams to score, a bet that has landed in their last three meetings, while those expecting another goal-fest can get 13/2 about five goals or more.
