The Form – England vs France

England’s Form

England came into this World Cup in very shaky form which left a lot of question marks around Gareth Southgate and his team’s World Cup prospects. Their performances since the tournament started have put any doubts about if this team is a true contender to bed.

The Three Lions began their World Cup campaign by putting six goals past Iran in an incredible display of their attacking firepower. Next time out they struggled against the United States in a 0-0 draw but a 3-0 win against Wales boosted the mood in the England camp heading into the knockout rounds.

Against Senegal England were sluggish in the opening half an hour and in truth the Senegalese could have been ahead. Instead, they weathered the storm and showed their class to put the game to bed with two goals just before the half time whistle.

France’s Form

France have been one of the form teams in this competition throughout. Their first game came against an unfancied Australian side and they put the Aussies to the sword with four goals in a complete performance.

The second group game was billed as the big one against a Denmark side that has had France’s number in recent times. The Danes almost held them to a draw but in the end the magnificent Kylian Mbappe popped up with a goal late to ensure his team qualification to the knockout rounds of this World Cup.

The third and final group game came against Tunisia which ended in a 1-0 loss. I wouldn’t give too much weight to this result as France fielded a ‘B’ team essentially and had nothing to play for given their qualified status.

Poland were next up for the reigning world champions. France controlled this game from start to finish and it was an Olivier Giroud goal just before half-time which reflected their supremacy on the scoreboard. Two goals from Mbappe late in the second half put the game to bed before Lewandowski scored a consolation goal just before the full-time whistle.

How The Two Teams Match Up – England vs France Prediction

England’s Attack

According to Sven-Goran Eriksson England have the best attack in this tournament. That is a big claim but there is certainly plenty of attacking talent in the England ranks.

Bukayo Saka has been brilliant in this World Cup, Marcus Rashford has also shown just how good he can be, Phil Foden is one of the best young attacking midfielders in the world and Harry Kane is a world class striker.

The big question going into this game is – what formation will Gareth Southgate play? He has favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation up to this point and it has worked very well for the Three Lions. Now, they face France and an in-form Kylian Mbappe.

Based on the conservative track record of Southgate I think we see him play a five-back system which could mean Jordan Henderson drops to the bench.

England have the attacking talent to cause France a lot of problems in this game. Harry Kane got his name on the score sheet last time out and if he gets good service from midfield then there will be serious questions asked of France’s defence.

France’s Defence

France have favoured a 4-2-3-1 set up in this World Cup. You can expect Adrien Rabiot and Aurelien Tchouameni to be tasked with defensive midfield roles to protect their back four.

Man United’s Raphael Varance and Upamecano of Bayern Munich will anchor the center of the defence with Hugo Lloris of Tottenham in goal behind them.

All of these French defenders are individually quality players. This team have not conceded more than one goal in any of their World Cup games so far so the defensive track record is pretty good coming into this game.

The one weakness that I think England could find joy from is a low defensive work rate from France’s front four. While the likes of Mbappe and Griezmann are great players on the ball they are not renowned for their defensive work in tracking back.

If England can break at pace they could create some great chances in this game.

France’s Attack

As England and Gareth Southgate will be well aware, this France team are lethal in attack. They were dealt a massive blow pre-tournament when Ballon D’or winner Karim Benzema was ruled out of this World Cup through injury but they have not let this slow them down.

Olivier Giroud has come into the team in place of Benzema and the AC Milan striker has been in top form with three goals so far in this tournament.

Mbappe is the star of this team and he has been in imperious form with five goals from the first four games.

Stopping him will go a long way to stopping this French attack. France have totalled nine goals at this World Cup which makes for an average of 2.25 per game.

England’s Defence

Gareth Southgate has a huge decision to make in terms of how he wants to set up his team in defence for this game. He has played a 4-2-3-1 formation in this tournament so far but England haven’t played a top team like France until this point either.

I think it’s more likely than not that we see a five-back system employed by the Three Lions in this game to give added protection against France’s potent attack. Kyle Walker can slot into the right center back role which we’ve seen him play in the past and Kieran Trippier can play wing back on the right side so two players can track the threat of Mbappe.

This England team have a great defensive record in this tournament with three clean sheets from four games.

An extra defender against France will make them very hard to break down.

England vs France Prediction and Best Bet

For the best bet in this game I’ve picked out Harry Kane to score the first goal boosted to odds of 11/2 from 9/2. The Spurs striker looks to be rounding into form at just the right time and I feel like he will be a handful for this France defence.

England vs France Prediction – Goalscorer Betting Odds

If you want to look past Harry Kane in the goalscorer betting, then Olivier Giroud looks like the next best option. Giroud is 2/1 to score anytime in this game which I feel represents good value.
