In Form Gosden Going For Gold

As Gold Cups go, the London Gold Cup is not one of the most prestigious but that takes place at Newbury tomorrow (4.30).

Again Godolphin are responsible for the likely favourite Good Run, who was a two-time winner last season. While Good Run has obvious claims for Saeed Bin Suroor it is the trainer in form John Gosden who is given the nod to send out the winner with Cartago.

The Prince Khalid Abdullah-owned three-year-old also won twice as a juvenile and will be making his seasonal bow on this occasion, but Gosden’s horses are in good form and this son of Dansili should appreciate the ground and the trip and is battle hardened after having seven starts last season and that can stand him in good stead in this company.

Punchestown is Back
Punchestown stage their penultimate meeting before the track gets a summer break and a horse that stands out is the Dermot McLoughlin-trained Clontarf in the punchestown.com Handicap Hurdle at 3.10.

Michael Griffin’s Bye Bye O Bye has been in fantastic form of late and bids to return to winning ways in this race. But when he started his little run of form on the track at Kilbeggan, he had Clontarf eight lengths behind in fifth but was getting 14lbs off McLoughlin’s charge.

For Saturday’s meeting, Bye Bye O Bye is now 16lbs higher having won and finished second since Kilbeggan.

Clontarf meanwhile is 1lb lower in the handicap ratings and the fresher horse having not ran since last month. The seven-year-old’s recent runs in defeat have been decent and hopefully he can finally open his account on this occasion.
