What Is The Galway Hurdle?

The Galway Hurdle is one of the two biggest races of the Galway Races Festival. The race is run over a distance of 2 miles with horses and jockeys having to navigate 9 hurdles over the duration of the trip.

The other big race at the Galway Races is the Galway Plate which we previewed in a recent post.

When Is The Galway Hurdle?

The 2023 Galway Hurdle will take place at 17:05, Thursday, August 3rd. That is day 4 of the Galway Races festival which is also notably Ladies Day.

The Galway Hurdle is the flagship race on Thursday at the Galway Races.

The Galway Hurdle Prize Money

The prize money for the Galway Hurdle is €300,000. That makes it the richest race in the Irish National Hunt calendar.

Galway Hurdle Betting Favourites

Filey Bay – Galway Hurdle Favourite

The favourite for the 2023 Galway Hurdle is Filey Bay at odds of 6/1.

The Emmet Mullins-trained horse has a lifetime record of 2 wins from 6 outings over hurdles.

Last time out Filey Bay finished 8th out of 14 in Roscommon at the start of July. That was his first outing in 109 days after placing third in the County Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Zarak The Brave

The co-second favourite for this year’s Galway Hurdle is Zarak The Brave at odds of 10/1.

This W P Mullins-trained horse has a lifetime record of 1 win from 4 races over hurdles.

Zarak’s last outing came at Auteuil in May where he finished 3rd of 10 runners. Prior to that the 4-year-old was 2nd at Punchestown in the Ballymore Champion Four Year Old Hurdle.

Brazil

Another co-second favourite for the 2023 Galway Hurdle is Brazil who is 10/1 in the betting.

This 5-year-old has an impressive lifetime record of 3 wins from 10 outings over hurdles. The Padraig Roche-trained horse will need to improve on the form he has shown this year if he is to win the Galway Hurdle. In three races in 2023 Brazil has finished 8/10, 14/18 and 10/16.

Buddy One

The third and final co-second favourite for the 2023 Galway Hurdle is Buddy One who has also been installed at odds of 10/1 in the betting.

This Paul John Gilligan-trained horse has only 1 win in his career from 8 races over hurdles. The 6-year-old had a strong start to the year with a 3rd place finish at the Cheltenham Festival followed up by a 3rd place finish at Aintree the next month.

Buddy One raced twice after an 81 day break over shorter distances of 1m6f and 1m3.5f in July which should see him in good condition coming into this race.
