Galway v Tyrone Preview

Galway’s Form

Galway are one of the form sides in the country, they finished in second place in Division 1 National Football League with a record of four wins, two draws and only one defeat enough to earn them a spot in the National League Final after building a team off the best defence in the competition with only 91-points conceded an average of just 13 points per game. However, they would lose the League Final to Mayo in a 0-14-0-11 scoreline.

Galway recovered from that League Final defeat to win the Connacht Championship they did so by beating Roscommon in a 1-09-1-13 scoreline made more impressive by the fact that Roscommon were coming into it high on confidence after beating Mayo in the Quarter-Final. Galway secured the Connacht Championship at the beginning of the month beating Sligo comprehensively in a 0-12-2-20 scoreline.

Tyrone’s Form

Tyrone will be playing their league football in Division 1 next year; their 4th place mid-table finish this year with a record of four wins and three defeats from their seven matches Tyrone scored 113 points in the league which was an average of 16.14 points per match that was only bettered by Mayo’s 126 points which was an average of 18 points per match. However, defensively they were very open at the back with 110 points conceded an average of 15.7 per match the third worst in the league after Donegal conceding 117 points and their opponents Monaghan’s total of 119.

Tyrone comes into this following a disappointing early exit in the Ulster Championship when they were knocked out by Monaghan in the Quarter-Final in a 1-18 to 2-17 scoreline

Key Players To Watch

Sean Kelly

Galway have a strong defence in their first seven league games of the season they had the best defence conceding a total of 91 points which was an average of 13 points per match. In the final which they lost, they conceded 0-14 to Mayo. They have largely continued this record only conceding 1-09 and 0-12 during their victorious Connacht Championship run.

Crucial to those defensive efforts is Captain and Galway Full-Back Sean Kelly who will play a key role in leading the Galway defensive at the weekend.

Darren McCurry

The Right corner-forward was Tyrone’s main man during the league campaign and expect that to continue on Saturday. His league tally of 0-33 in seven matches was the highest average points haul of the top scorers averaging 4.71 points per match

He continued this form in their Ulster Quarter-Final defeat where he scored 0-5 points with 3 points coming from frees. Tyrone will need McCurry to hit at least his 5 points per game total if they are to stand a chance at the weekend.

Galway v Tyrone Prediction & Best Bet

Galway have been in flying form in 2023 with the only blot in their form book coming in their defeat at the hands of Mayo in the League Final. However, they recovered well from that to win the Connacht Championship and with that victory under their belt, they will come into this match as big favourites.

Tyrone on the other hand are coming into this following an inconsistent league campaign and an early exit in the Ulster Championship. That being said there is plenty of talent in the side with the likes of McCurry capable of even causing a watertight Galway defence problems on their day.

With all that being said I cannot see past Galway who not only have the 2023 form book on their side, the recent head-to-heads, but also home advantage. Galway should win this comfortably.

Prediction: Galway 0-17 Tyrone 0-13

Best Bet: Galway Winning Margin 4-6 3/1
