Gary Lineker Backed Into 100/1 To Be Next UK Prime Minster

Gary Lineker has entered the race to be the next UK Prime Minister according to our latest betting odds for the top position in Westminster.

Lineker Backed To Be Next UK Prime Minister

Lineker is an unlikely candidate that has been backed to be the next Prime Minister of the UK after Rishi Sunak’s reign ends.

The former Barcelona and England footballer, who stepped down from presenting Match Of The Day amidst a social media policy row with BBC bosses, has seen had his odds trimmed to 100/1 (from 1,000/1) with us here at BoyleSports.

Gary Lineker has nudged ahead of Liz Truss who is 150/1 on the bookmaker’s list to have another crack of the whip, while Leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer, remains the 2/5 favourite to replace Rishi Sunak as PM.

Gary Lineker Match of the Day Controversy

The origin of the Match of the Day controversy came from Gary Lineker, who has a history of being very outspoken on social and political issues, tweeting criticism of the UK government on a new asylum policy.

More specifically, Lineker compared the language used in the new UK government policy to that of 1930s Germany. Bosses at the BBC took issue with Lineker broadcasting these views to the public.

It is alleged in reports that the BBC forced him to step back from his role as presenter of Match of the Day until he apologises for his remarks and signs a new contract that has stricter rules on what he can and can’t say on social media.

An ever growing list of broadcasting peers have come out in support of the former Leicester City and England star, including Ian Wright, Alan Shearer Micah Richards, Jermaine Jenas and Alex Scott, sending BBC bosses scrambling to fill content on their popular sports shows.

At this point there’s a standoff between Lineker and BBC bosses surrounding this issue and we can only wait and see what happens next in the ongoing controversy.

There is a strong chance that Match of the Day doesn’t go to air this Sunday evening as many of Lineker’s colleagues on the programme are vowing not to make an appearance on the show in solidarity with him.

Odds On Gary Lineker Returning To Match Of The Day

Meanwhile, here at BoyleSports we are quoting 1/7 that Lineker will resolve the row with BBC bosses and return to Match Of The Day, while it’s 4/1 that bridges will have been burned permanently and Gary will not be back in the MOTD seat again.

A spokesperson for BoyleSports, said:

“If you had asked us one month ago what Gary Lineker’s chances of being next PM were, we would probably have said there wasn’t enough zeros, but this morning we’ve seen a remarkable move for Lineker which has forced us to cut his odds.

“We still think he is a long shot but if this debacle has shown anything it’s that Gary, just like a seasoned politician, is able to quickly garner support and BBC chiefs might be forced to make an embarrassing U turn.”
