Geraint Thomas Loses Grip On Tour De France Favouritism

Geraint Thomas’ stint as Tour De France favourite has proved to be short-lived after he was overtaken in the betting this week by teammate Egan Bernal.

The Welshman moved to the head of the market when Chris Froome was ruled out of the race following his high-speed crash prior to stage 4 of the Criterium du Dauphine, but Thomas also has minor injuries to shake off having subsequently abandoned the Tour de Suisse after a fall of his own.

He has been given the all-clear to defend his yellow jersey this month but in-form Colombian Egan Bernal has leapfrogged his teammate in the betting and has closed all the way into 2/1 from 14/1 since Froome’s absence was confirmed.

Rivalry between the Team Ineos colleagues could well surface during the two-week race after Thomas described himself as the team’s ‘Plan A’ despite them naming both riders as joint leaders going into Saturday’s opening stage.

The odds however are now in the Colombian’s favour after Thomas drifted to 3/1 from 2/1 in the week before the Grand Départ.

Adam and Simon Yates at 11/1 and 50/1 respectively represent the next best chance of a fourth British winner of the yellow jersey, with Irishman Dan martin at 50/1
