Glorious Goodwood 2018 Day 1 Betting Tips – Niall Cronin

The biggest disappointment about this week for anyone that has to go to either Galway or Goodwood is that you miss the bulk of the action at the other meeting but for those heading to Galway there is plenty of quality to try and see before arriving at Ballybrit.

The Goodwood Cup is the feature on day one and there may be an upset on the cards.

Harrington To Turn The Tables
Frankie Dettori will be disappointed to miss the ride on Ascot Gold Cup winner Stradivarius but it is a very good spare for Andrea Atzeni to pick up and John Gosden’s charge is a horse he knows well having beaten Dettori on Big Orange in this race last year.

However, the Ascot Gold Cup form might be turned here by Jessica Harrington’s Torcedor.

The game stayer was a fine third in the Ascot Gold Cup and only beaten a length but probably found himself having to go for home a bit earlier than anticipated under Colm O’Donoghue and this seven runner contest might just make it easier for O’Donoghue to dictate what he wants to do.

Any rain that falls won’t do Torcedor any harm nor will the drop in trip and he looks like a stayer that is improving with age and…

with not much to find with the favourite his price of 4/1 makes him appealing.

Cosmic Can Be Vintage Winner
Aidan O’Brien is represented in the Qatar Vintage Stakes by Van Beethoven and he is in around the 10/1 mark but O’Brien is giving a word of warning for his runners with a bit of cloud over Ballydoyle and there isn’t much about that price that makes appeal.

One horse that did look like he might outrun his odds at a similar price is Cosmic Law for Richard Fahey and PJ McDonald.

A winner at Epsom’s Derby meeting by six lengths, Cosmic Law couldn’t quite mix it in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot but that race just might not have been run to suit him ideally as he led up the stands side and taking his time over seven furlongs for the first time might help this son of No Nay Never.

Cosmic Law is related to a couple of winners over further, albeit they never reached the level that he is aiming for here, but his Epsom win was a very good effort and this renewal of the Qatar Vintage Stakes doesn’t look the strongest…

so looking down for a bit of value points towards Cosmic Law.

Recommended Bets:
Torcedor (4/1) – 3.35 Goodwood
Cosmic Law (9/1) – 2.25 Goodwood
