Harry Kane v Alan Shearer’s Legacy – Michael Owen Gives His Thoughts

Harry Kane v Alan Shearer’s Legacy, a man familiar with both gives us the lowdown on who he thinks been better!

England Captain and record scorer Harry Kane made the big move to Bayern following fourteen trophyless years at Tottenham. Kane’s move to Bayern is in search of the trophies he probably feels his stature as a player deserves.

However, this move meant that Kane is less likely to catch Alan Shearer on the All-Time Premier League scorer charts with his 213 goal total 47 goals short of Shearer.

At BoyleSports we caught up with former England striker Michael Owen and teammate of Alan Shearer to give his verdict on who has the greater legacy as a footballer.

Owen also gave us his perspective on Eddie Howe’s performances as Newcastle manager and offers an interesting insight into his potential as an England Manager.

Kane wanted to win “trophies”

We’ll probably judge Kane’s career when he retires. I made some headlines when the reports of Kane joining Bayern came out by saying that it wasn’t the right move for him. I still think that.

He said he’s wanted to win trophies all his life. If he didn’t think that would happen at Spurs, he wouldn’t have signed so many contracts there and reached an age where he didn’t have control of his future.

Kane then got to a stage where he had one year left on his contract, and he could have had his pick of virtually anywhere and moved there a year later. At that time, I thought that, with Ange Postecoglou and his attacking football coming in, he’d still have his future in his hands if he stayed for another year, regardless of whether things went well or not. He could’ve scored plenty of goals in this team!

Bayern Munich are a huge club in Europe, but he could have easily broken the Premier League goal record. In my opinion, Bayern are going to win the Bundesliga every year either way.

Munich Move Regret?

If Kane retires and can only point to his two or three Bundesliga medals, then I think staying in England would have been better. He has a young family here and he’s lived in England his whole life.

Everything was so perfect. I, personally, wouldn’t have done it. I would have changed things in the past to make sure I’m in a better position!

I would have done another year if I were Kane. It’s great to see him doing so well. He’s similar to Shearer in a lot of ways. Alan probably thought Kane was going to break his record, and he probably let out a sigh of relief when Harry went to Germany.

Is Eddie Howe’s Job In Danger?

There are loads of ifs and buts, but as it stands, Eddie Howe is probably my favourite Premier League manager. I think he’s absolutely incredible.

I had the pleasure of meeting him on the TV show I’m on, and I enjoyed talking to him so much. I know he did, too. We talked football all the time, and I’ve never been so impressed with anybody!

Could Howe manage England?

If I were the chairman of a Premier League club, I would have been head over heels in trying to get him! I think he’s as talented as it comes, and he’s also a great person. I think he’s a future England manager, but that won’t be for a while as he has a huge job on his hands. I think he’s top-class.

The only thing to consider is the pressure of the big jobs, especially after a few bad results. I think it’d be foolish to think he’d be under pressure if Newcastle don’t win anything and fail to get into the top four this season.
