BoyleSports Irish Grand National

He said: “It’s a cracking renewal of the BoyleSports Irish Grand National and it’s great to have a horse like Gaillard Du Mesnil in there. He is a dual Grade One winner over hurdles and he probably hasn’t hit the same heights yet over fences. Such is the strength and depth of Willie Mullins’ yard, if he was in any other yard, he would be a star.

“He has 11-8 on his back and I think he is the most likely winner of the race. He is the class option. He is the Grade One horse in a handicap and the one I would like to ride if I had a spare ride in the race.

“My own horse Time To Get Up was the winner of the 2021 Midlands Grand National and was third in the renewal last month. Because this is such a high quality race he probably needs to improve a little bit but at 20/1 he is good ach way value.

“The fairy-tale story is definitely Max Flamingo for Francis Casey. We all know how shrewd the Casey’s are with the late Peter Casey a brilliant trainer of Flemenstar. When they get a good horse they can have them right for the big day.

“This has been the plan all season for this horse. He was a winner over hurdles at this meeting last season and this is what they have been aiming for. He was an impressive winner in Thurles on his last start.

“Another local trainer that could go well is Matthew Smith who has Ronald Pump. He was second in a Stayers’ Hurdle and is a class act over hurdles. He has a chance and ran a cracker in the Leinster National.

“My heart is going to rule my head here though and I’m going for the fairy-tale story and hope I think Max Flamingo is the each way pick of the race.”
