The Form –  Man City v Inter Milan

Man City’s Form

Man City have been imperious all season, winning the Premier League with an 89-point total. That total put them five points clear of second.

The Citizens completed the second step of their treble journey last weekend by winning the FA Cup Final against Man United 2-1 after two outside the box goals from Ilkay Gundogan. They are one step away from immortality with just Inter Milan standing in their way in this weekend’s Champions League Final.

Man City’s Path To The Champions League Final

Man City Road To The Champions League Final

In the Champions League, they were drawn into a group which included Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Copenhagen. In that group they went unbeaten with four wins and two draws while scoring fourteen goals and only conceding two in the process.

In the Round of 16 they were drawn against RP Leipzig and after a 1-1 draw away they proceeded to dismantle them 7-0 at home in the second leg.

The quarter-final saw them drawn against German giants Bayern Munich who they made light work of by beating them 3-0 in the first leg and drawing 1-1 in the return leg to secure a semi-final spot against Real Madrid.

In the first leg of that semi-final in the Bernabeu it was a 67th-minute Kevin De Bruyne strike that earned Guardiola’s side a 1-1 draw leaving the tie in the balance for the second leg. City went on to dominate the return leg in a 4-0 victory at the Etihad which puts them in prime position to complete a prized treble.

Inter Milan’s Form

Inter Milan have had a decent season domestically in 2022/23. In Serie A they finished third on 72 points winning four of their last five league matches to finish two points behind Lazio in second place, eighteen points behind Napoli in first and two points clear of local rivals AC Milan in fourth place.

Inter also won the Coppa Italia Final beating Europa Conference League finalists Florentina 1-2 in the decider to lift the trophy.

Inter Milan’s Path To The Champions League Final

Inter Milan Road To The Champions League Final

In the Champions League this season they were initially drawn in what many people saw as the “Group of Death” with Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Viktoria Plzeň.

Despite the tough draw they managed to qualify from their group ahead of Barcelona and Plzeň as runners-up behind Bayern with a record of three wins, one draw and two defeats (both to Bayern Munich). During the group stage they scored ten goals and conceded seven.

They were handed a favourable Round of 16 tie versus Porto who they overcame 1-0 on aggregate after winning the first leg at home 1-0 and completing the job with a 0-0 draw away from home in the second leg.

They were drawn against another Portuguese opponent in the shape of Benfica for the quarter-final. Inter would go on to win the first leg in Portugal 2-0 and comfortably secure their Semi-Final place with an entertaining 3-3 draw in the second leg.

They booked their place in the Champions League Final by overcoming their Milan rivals AC 0-2 in the first leg with an ‘away’ win and followed that up with a 1-0 ‘home’ win to book their spot in the Champions League Final for the first time since 2010 when Mourinho guided them to the title.

Man City v Inter Milan Preview

Man City’s Attack

Man City have the best attack in the Champions League this season with 31 goals scored in the competition thus far which is an average of 2.58 goals per match across their 12 games.

This attack is led by the freak of nature that is Erling Haaland. The Norwegian has scored a staggering 12 goals and contributed 1 assist in this year’s competition which is good enough to be the competition’s top-scorer.

Man City play a short passing possession-based game where they average 63% of the ball which is typical of Pep Guardiola coached sides. Not only do City dominate possession but they enjoy that possession typically deep in their opponent’s half.

They are comfortable with holding the ball for long periods, toying with their opponents and waiting for a mistake before De Bruyne, Silva and co play balls in-behind to the clinical Erling Haaland.

Inter Milan’s Defence

Inter Milan will have very little of the ball at the weekend. The final possession stat for them is likely to be anything between 20-40% so their 3-5-2 formation is more likely to look like a 5-3-2 low-block with wing-back Dumfries and Dimarco dropping back deep to defend.

The key man for me for this Inter Milan defensive effort to hold out the onslaught is Nicolo Barella who will be tasked with providing tenacious energy in midfield. There is a good chance that you could see him given a man-marking job on De Bruyne and don’t be surprised to see him attempt to regularly break up the Man City attack in the central areas of the pitch.

Inter are strong at defending set-pieces but are likely to give up many chances to Man City while in the low block which is something which could see Haaland have a field day.

Inter Milan’s Attack

Inter will be tasked with creating opportunities from limited possession and primarily counter-attacking football. What you’re likely to see is when the ball is recovered (likely to be due to Barellla) you will see Barella, Calhanoglu and Mkhitaryan playing long balls down to the runners down the flanks in Dumfries and Dimarco.

Lautaro Martínez’s energy from attack will be crucial at the weekend as not only their main linkman in attack but also their first line of defence with his pressing, tackling and all-round tenacity which Inter will hope will cause the Man City defence an awful lot of headaches and no time in possession.

He will be tasked with holding the ball up and linking up with the veteran striker Edin Džeko. It’s likely that at some stage in the second half we will see Dzeko make away for Romelu Lukaku.

Man City’s Defence

Man City have conceded 5 goals across the competition, an average of 0.41 goals conceded per game despite having played the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Man City, despite their excellent defensive record, I would argue are not the most defensively solid team we have seen play in the Champions League. The reason for their excellent record is that they dominate possession in every game so give up very few chances to other teams to score.

Kyle Walker’s recovery pace along with Stones and Rodri breaking up play in midfield is also key.

Man City v Inter Milan Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Man City 3-1 Inter Milan

Man City are favourites and justifiably so after securing the FA Cup last weekend in a game in which they arguably never left second gear. They will have plenty left in the tank to complete the treble at the weekend.

Inter Milan are huge underdogs but come into this match with all the pressure on Man City and have a free hit of sorts to win the Champions League for the first time since their victory in 2010.

Man City are in a league of their own though and the treble seems to be a formality at this stage. I expect Man City to finish the job rather comfortably at the weekend but Inter Milan will have a say on this just yet.

Best Bet: Man City 3-1 Inter Milan @ 11/1
