Man United v Wolves – Preview

Man United

Erik ten Hag had a positive first season as Manchester United manager returning the club to the Champions League with a third-place Premier League finish. United also won a trophy with the EFL Cup and that could’ve been two had they not lost to Man City 2-1 in the final of the FA Cup.

This is another important season though for the club and while they are unlikely to win a Premier League this season, they will need to be in the conversation longer into the season.

As ten Hag enters his second season at the helm in the Theatre of Dreams, the squad he inherited is finally starting to look like it is in the mould of a side that is in his name.

For example, if you look at the squads that Pep Guardiola inherited at Manchester City, or the squad Jurgen Klopp inherited at Liverpool they’re entirely different and in both cases, it was done far quicker than you would think from memory.

During the off-season, the club recruited well bringing in the likes of Mason Mount, André Onana and Rasmus Højlund with more signings expected at the club pending outgoings. The signing of Mason Mount opens up a huge amount of versatility in ten Hag’s tactical options which we looked at in a post here.

Pre-Season is more about fitness and learning but they have had a decent one with four wins (including against Arsenal) three defeats albeit against Wrexham with an u23 side, a 0-2 loss against Real Madrid and a 2-3 defeat against Dortmund. A largely reserve side drew their final game 1-1 against Bilbao.

Wolves

Wolves had a strange season last year, they went through three different managers after Bruno Lage left in October, Steve Davis took temporary charge for a month before Julen Lopetegui was appointed on the 14th of November. They went on to finish a respectable 13th in the league along with making the Quarter-Final of the EFL Cup.

That being said, there has been a lot of change during the off-season at Wolves with a mass exodus of players including the following:

23 June 2023 – Rúben Neves – Al-Hilal – £47,000,000

30 June 2023 – João Moutinho – Free Agent

30 June 2023 – Adama Traoré – Free Agent

4 July 2023 – Nathan Collins – Brentford – £23,000,000

25 July 2023 – Raúl Jiménez – Fulham – £5,500,000

Between those five they made 170 appearances for Wolves last season. That is a lot of experience to replace, and it remains to be seen whether the likes of Traore can step it up alongside the returning Cunha and Doherty.

Pre-Season results were largely impressive though with four wins and two draws, but with Julen Lopetegui gone and Gary O’Neil just in, this could be a tough start to the season for the club.

Man United v Wolves Head-to-Head Results

Manchester United have 10 wins, 4 draws have taken place and Wolves have 4 wins.

Here’s how have the last five games gone between these two teams:

13 May 2023 Premier League | Manchester United 2 – 0 Wolves

31 December 2022 Premier League | Wolves 0-1 Manchester United

3 January 2022 Premier League | Manchester United 0-1 Wolves

29 August 2021 Premier League | Wolves 0-1 Manchester United

23 May 2021 Premier League | Wolves 1-2 Manchester United

Man United v Wolves Prediction

Prediction: Manchester United 3-1 Wolves

Recent games between these clubs have been low-scoring, but the opening game of the season often brings goals. I think Manchester United are stronger now and Wolves look like they’re in a little bit of chaos at the moment with only recently appointing Gary O’Neil so close to the start of the season.

Best Bet: Marcus Rashford First Goalscorer @ 7/2
