McIlroy And Lowry Lead Irish Open Field As First And Second Favourites

Punters are backing a home winner of this week’s Irish Open as Mount Juliet prepares to host the tournament for the first time since 1995.

Rory McIlroy is a clear favourite at 9/2 to win the event for the second time after his victory at The K Club five years ago,

…but Offaly man Shane Lowry has also moved into 11/1 from 14/1 as he also chases a second victory in his home open following his memorable breakthrough as an amateur at Baltray in 2009.

That makes Lowry second favourite with Tommy Fleetwood in third at 12/1 in a field that also includes former winners John Catlin (50/1), Jamie Donaldson (66/1), Padraig Harrington (66/1), Ross Fisher (90/1) and Soren Kjeldsen (200/1).

Martin Kaymer, who was last week named as a vice-captain for September’s Ryder Cup in Wisconsin by captain Harrington, has also been backed into 16/1 from 35/1 for a win at the Kilkenny venue after a spectacular final round of 64 on Sunday propelled him to a runner-up finish behind Victor Hovland at the BMW International Open in Munich.
