Nashville’s Form
Nashville are one of the newest expansion teams in the MLS and are only in the fourth season as a club. They finished the 2022 season with a playoff berth and a first-round exit, they got to the US Open Quarter-Final and won the Leagues Cup showcase match on penalties against Club America 4-2 penalties after a 3-3 draw in normal time.
The club moved from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference for the 2023 season and are currently fourth place in the Eastern Conference and fifth in the overall MLS standings. They have had an excellent Leagues Cup run though.
They qualified from their group in second place with a 2-1 win over Colorado Rapids and lost in a 7-goal thriller against Touluca 3-4. They have ridden their luck at times in the competition though. In the Round of 32, they narrowly overcame FC Cincinnati 4-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw and in the Round of 16, they drew 2-2 against América before winning out 6-5 on penalties.
However, they stamped their credentials in the Quarter-Final with a 5-0 victory against Minnesota United with remarkably five different goal-scorers too. Finally last weekend they qualified for the final by winning 0-2 against Monterrey after two late goals from Sturridge and Picault.
Inter Miami’s Form

Inter Miami currently occupy fifteenth in the MLS Eastern Conference Table and 29th place in the Overall MLS Standings following a very poor season at the club. However, the cup competitions have been better for them with them in the US Open Cup Semi-Final against FC Cincinnati next week, following a run which included them beating Nashville 2-1 in the Round of 16.
However, it is following the historic capture of Lionel Messi that the club has really begun to turn their fortunes with an excellent run in the Leagues Cup. Messi made his debut for the club on 21 July in their opening Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul, scoring with a free-kick in stoppage time for a 2–1 victory. They followed that with a 4-0 win against Atlanta to top their group helped this time by a Messi double.
In the Round of 32, they beat Orlando 3-1 again with a double from Messi and in the Round of 16 they overcame a scare with a 4-4 draw against FC Dallas(again Messi got a double) they eventually won on penalties 3-5.
Like Nashville, they stamped their credentials in the Quarter-Final with a comprehensive victory beating Charlotte FC 4-0 and qualifying for the final last weekend with a 1-4 win against Philadelphia Union.
