The Netherlands are in the midst of their second spell in charge under Ronald Koeman who took over in January (the first being between 2018-2020). Koeman’s appointment this time around came following the resignation of Louis Van Gaal after their World Cup Quarter-Final elimination to Argentina the previous month.

The second spell started against France where they were completely outclassed being defeated 4-0 in their first Euro 2024 Qualifying Game. The Dutch recovered from that defeat to win 3-0 against Gibraltar, albeit in a match which they would’ve been expected to win comfortably.

During the June international window, they lost in the Nations League Semi-Final 2-4 against Croatia and in the third-place playoff 2-3 against Italy. A tough start to the Koeman era part II.

Since the September Window, the tide has turned with four victories from five matches for the Netherlands. In September they scored a crucial 3-0 win against Greece. They followed that up with a trip to Dublin where they defeated the Republic of Ireland 1-2.

The October international window saw them lose 1-2 against France and win 0-1 against Greece. Those results see the Dutch 2nd in the group on the head-to-head tiebreaker over Greece with two games remaining.

Ebosele is having a breakthrough season at Udinese and as a result is bound to get a start sooner rather than later for his country. He should be starting on Saturday (although I have my doubts that he will).

Prediction: Netherlands 2-1 Republic of Ireland

The Netherlands can take a huge step toward qualifying for Euro 2024 with a victory here. While they’re not the outfit they once were under Van Gaal, their victories over Greece suggest they’re still a more than capable footballing outfit.

Ireland are going into this with nothing but pride to play for, and while the shackles could be released by Kenny as his job nears the end, I suspect he might be a little safer in his selection. His thought process being that on the off chance they get a result, he could “save his job”. That ship has sadly sailed.

Ireland won’t be battered though as I expect this game to be tight.
