Newbury Tips & Preview From Robbie Power

BoyleSports Racing Ambassador Robbie Power gives his Newbury tips and previews the big races this weekend.

Denman Chase Preview – 2.05 pm Race

I don’t think the fall at the King George will play in the mind of Nico [de Boinville]. It was just an unfortunate incident. Shishkin looked to have the King George at his mercy, jumped the second last, went two strides and unfortunately stumbled and Nico was unseated.

The horse didn’t have a bad fall, so it shouldn’t affect his confidence too much. And he is the one they all have to beat.

That’s a very strong line of form, the performance, he looked like he was going to put up with the King George. And it looks like a two-horse race with him and Protektorat, who ran a blinder in Lingfield the last day but was well held at the end.

On the last day in Lingfield, Harry Skelton made a lot of use out of Protektorat. I think he’ll do the same thing again and that’s going to suit Shishkin who can just sit into a position just behind him.

I know Nico was quite forceful on him in the King George as well but I think he’ll be happy to follow Harry on Protektorat who should make this a true run race.

Boothill took a fall in Kempton at Christmas. If he bounces back from that, his form has been very good.

I do think Editeur Du Gite is probably a little bit overlooked, but on his form this season, he’s probably priced up the right way. He does usually have his best form around Cheltenham but he will make this a truly run race as well. He goes a good gallop from the front, that’s his style of racing.

Boothill needs to step up to this level. He’s shown some good form before that. If they all run to the top of their levels, I think Edwardstone wins this race.

He was tried up in trip and probably didn’t stay. But back down to two miles, I think this is his trip and he can be positively ridden. The race is going to be run to suit him and there’ll be plenty of pace in it.

So I fancy Edwardstone to beat Boothill and Editeur Du Gite.

Tip: Edwardstone @ 13/8

It’s a hard one to weigh up with Ocastle Des Mottes obviously coming out of Willie’s. If he travels over he’d be competitive. My one concern is that Paul Townend has elected to stay at home in Naas the same day where he’s got some good rides and that’s not the main concern.

Daryl Jacob, who would have the choice after Paul Townend to ride the Munir and Souede horses, has elected to go to Warwick. That would A. raise question marks as to whether or not Ocastle Des Mottes is going to run and B. is he going to win the race because both Daryl and Paul have decided to go elsewhere and Danny [Mullins] steps in.

He won’t lack from the saddle with Danny riding him but just as a win possibility that would be a negative for me that both Daryl and Paul have decided to swerve this.

We have to go on French form and my knowledge of French form is not wonderful. He was pulled up on his last start in France. So obviously Anthony Bromley and Willie know the horse and know plenty about him. So he obviously has a good level of ability. Has he a level of ability to win this hurdle race? I’m not so sure.

I quite like Iberico Lord for Nicky Henderson and JP McManus. JP has a fantastic record in this race, he won the grade one in Cheltenham. Disappointing probably behind Luccia when he was 7th in the big handicap in Ascot at Christmas. But that form of that race has worked out quite well.

Luccia reopposes here, but she’s got top weight. It’s going to be a tough task off top weight. But horses with big weights in this race do have a good record. It’s just a filly with a big weight at that. It’s going to be difficult for her.

Another one I like then each way in the race is Go Dante for Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen. They’re having a fantastic season.

Sean Bowen is fighting to be champion jockey and Go Dante beat Doddiethegreat who re-opposes here as well in a handicap in Cheltenham on soft ground. That’s a good line of form. Ground shouldn’t be an issue. And I think Go Dante has a good each-way chance in the race.

My pick, I’d go for Iberico Lord as the winner ahead of Ocastle Des Mottes.

Tip: Iberico Lord @ 6/1

Tip: Go Dante @ 20/1 E/W

I think with Inch House, that was a very good performance behind Stumptown in Cheltenham. Dropping back two furlongs in trip might just help as well, because jumping the last that day in Cheltenham I thought Inch House was going to win, but Stumptown outstayed him up the hill. So back on a flatter track and back in trip might just suit.

Interestingly enough, Inch House runs off the same mark on Saturday as he did in Cheltenham finishing 2nd. The handicapper felt no need to move him which is quite interesting and off that mark I think he’s still very competitive and the one to beat in this.

If there was one to oppose him it’s probably Makin’yourmindup for Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden who was second to Apple Away on testing ground in Leicester.

So I think Inch House is the most likely winner of the race but if you wanted to go for something else and go against the favourite I think Makin’yourmindup is the most likely alternative.

Tip: Inch House @ 11/8
