Newcastle’s Form

Newcastle, following their wealthy benefactors, upward trajectory and Champions League qualification last season, were always going to be a side to closely watch this season. That so far has held in the early stages of the 23/24 season..

The Magpies got off to a strong start to the league with a 5-1 win against Aston Villa. However, a tough stretch followed with losses against Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton which put pressure early in the season on Eddie Howe.

Newcastle answered back with a string of positive results. That included four wins and one draw in their last five league games. During that run they scored seventeen goals and conceded three after playing Brentford, Sheffield United, Burnley, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Most recently they travelled to Wolverhampton to take on Wolves on Saturday. After having a 2-1 lead going into the final twenty minutes, Hwang Hee Chan equalised in the 71st minute for Wolves to make it 2-2 which would end up being the final scoreline. This was despite Newcastle creating an XG of 2.2 to Wolves 0.9.

Before this game at the weekend, they will play out-of-form Manchester United in the Round of 16 in the EFL Cup. This will be a chance for Howe’s men to avenge their EFL Cup Final loss last season.
