Sinn Féin’s Still Top Party Despite Popularity Declining

The odds on Mary Lou McDonald being elected Taoiseach at the next Irish general election are continuing to shorten despite a drop in support at the opinion polls.

New figures from Red C for the Business Post saw Sinn Féin’s lead fall four points to 31%, but they comfortably remain the most popular party despite Fine Gael closing the gap with a three-point rise to 24%.

The shortening gap between the two parties has done little to damage Sinn Féin’s election prospects however according to Irish punters, as their status as hot favourites for the next election continues to strengthen with BoyleSports making them 1/12 shots to emerge with most seats after the next visit to the ballot box.

Fianna Fáil dropped one point to 15% in the latest poll and remain cut adrift in the betting at 8/1 alongside Fine Gael.

Mary Lou McDonald In Strong Position For Taoiseach Role

The latest betting moves also put Mary Lou McDonald firmly in pole position to be elected Taoiseach as the Sinn Féin President has now sunk further into 2/7 from 1/2, putting her well clear of 7/2 shot Leo Varadkar, who is set to resume Taoiseach duties before Christmas.

Mc Donald’s Being Elected Taoiseach Would Be Landmark Moment In Irish Politics

McDonald’s success in a General Election campaign would see her become the first ever female Taoiseach in the history of the Irish state. There have been four women that have served as Tánaiste in Ireland with the first of those being Mary Harney who was appointed to the role in 1997.

McDonald has a long and established political career spanning twenty plus years. In 2004 she was elected as Sinn Fein’s first ever MEP in Ireland in 2004. The Dublin native was first elected to Dáil Eireann in 2011 to represent the Dublin Central constituency which she ran for unsuccessfully in 2002 and 2007.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said:

We haven’t seen a sudden drop like this in Sinn Féin’s polling figures for some time, but Irish punters seem undeterred when it comes to betting on the next general election.

“It remains a one-sided affair and Mary Lou McDonald therefore is now 2/7 from 1/2 to be Taoiseach with Sinn Féin backed off the boards to return with most seats.”
