Team USA Ryder Cup Qualification Process

There are 12 spots up for grabs on the Team USA Ryder Cup squad. American players have until the conclusion of the BMW Championship (August 20th) to secure one of the six automatic spots on the team.

The remaining six spots will then be decided by Team USA Captain Zach Johnson’s Captain’s Picks.

As of July 25th the six players that hold automatic qualification spots for Team USA are Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Brooks Koepka, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay. Although this could change (and likely will) over the next few weeks.

Betting Favourites To Make USA Ryder Cup Team

Scottie Scheffler

At 1/500 to make the USA Ryder Cup Team is Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler’s status on the team is as close to a certainty as you can get as the world number one will be expected to be a key player for the Americans in Rome.

Wyndham Clark

Another 1/500 shot to make this year’s American Ryder Cup team is Wyndham Clark. The US Open Champion is second in the USA Ryder Cup rankings and is as good as nailed on for an automatic qualification spot.

Patrick Cantlay

World number 4 Patrick Cantlay comes in at odds of 1/250 to make the US Ryder Cup team.

Cantly currently holds the last automatic qualification spot and while he could drop out of automatic qualification he is basically guaranteed a Captain’s Pick if that were to happen (unless Captain Zach Johnson wants to make a stance against his slow play).

Xander Schauffele

Another near certainty to make the 2023 USA Ryder Cup team is Xander Schauffele at odds of 1/250 to make the American team.

This is a similar story to Cantlay, he currently holds an automatic spot but even if he were to lose that Zach Johnson will almost certainly pick him for this team.

Brooks Koepka

Despite playing on the LIV Tour Brooks Koepka has played well enough in the majors this season to currently hold an automatic qualification spot for the USA Ryder Cup team. He is 1/1250 to make this team.

Koepka will likely hold on to his automatic qualification spot but even if he doesn’t Zach Johnson will surely select the reigning USPGA Champion for his squad.

Jordan Spieth

Next up in the betting to make Team USA is Jordan Spieth at odds of 1/100. Spieth has had a career renaissance over the past couple years after struggling for a long period before that.

The three-time major winner doesn’t hold an automatic spot as things stand but unless he has a horrendous finish to the season he should at worst be a captain’s pick.

Max Homa

The number 7 ranked golfer in the world is another almost certainty to represent Team USA at the 2023 Ryder Cup. Homa has been installed at odds of 1/100 to make Team USA.

The 32-year-old is playing some of the best golf of his career this year and while he doesn’t currently occupy an automatic spot on the team he should be one of Zach Johnson’s picks if he doesn’t qualify automatically.

Brian Harman

Recently crowned Open Champion Brian Harman is 1/20 to make USA’s 2023 Ryder Cup team. Harman jumped up 17 spots thanks to his win at The Open and now occupies third spot in USA’s Ryder Cup rankings.

Harman is almost a certainty for an automatic qualification spot.

Rickie Fowler

Much like Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler has recently enjoyed a career renaissance having dropped as low as 185th in the World Rankings back in September of 2022.

Fowler is now 1/14 to make this team and while he might not earn an automatic spot on the team if he continues his impressive form Zach Johnson would find it difficult not to pick him for this squad.

Collin Morikawa

At this point in the betting to make the USA Ryder Cup team we are getting to some of the non-certainties. And Collin Morikaway is by no means a guarantee to make this team despite his 1/4 odds after a rough stretch of form in recent times.

The 23rd ranked golfer in the world and two-time major champion carries massive pedigree but he will need a strong finish to the season to assure himself a spot on this team.

Tony Finau

At odds of 1/2 to make the USA’s Ryder Cup team is Tony Finau. The 19th ranked golfer in the world likely will need a Captain’s pick to make this squad so strong form will be required over the home stretch of this PGA Tour season.

Justin Thomas

This is one of the most interesting names to keep an eye out for over the last few weeks of the PGA Tour season. Justin Thomas, given odds of 1/2 to make the USA team, has really struggled for form of late and is another player who will likely be relying on a Captain’s Pick to make this team.

The two-time USPGA Champion was most recently cut at The Open after posting +11 after two rounds.

Cameron Young

Next up in the betting to make Team USA is Cameron Young. The American is a big time player who has really caught the eye in recent major championships.

Young is in the mix to secure an automatic spot but even if he doesn’t I think Zach Johnson has to pick him for this team. Probably my favourite bet in this market at odds of 8/11.
