Could Mary Lou McDonald Be Headed For Tánaiste Role?

Green Party chief Eamon Ryan and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald are leading the race to be the next Tánaiste ahead of Saturday’s general election.

No party is being backed to return with enough seats to command a majority in the Dáil after Saturday’s vote, with a complex round of negotiations expected in a bid to form a coalition government.

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have both ruled out forming a coalition with Sinn Féin, but with polling figures making positive reading for Mary Lou McDonald, she is in the running for a deputy leadership role in the new government after being backed into 9/4 from 3/1.

The Green Party are also being tipped to form part of a likely coalition and it’s their leader Eamon Ryan who is the 7/4 favourite to be Tánaiste.

Micheál Martin is the runaway favourite at massive odds-on 1/14 to replace Leo Varadkar as Taoiseach.

The Fine Gael’s leader is also seeing support to fill the Tánaiste position at 8/1 from 16/1.
