Republic of Ireland Up Against It To Top Qualifying Group

Republic of Ireland are still third favourites of the five teams to top their Euro 2020 qualifying group despite going into Friday’s clash with Denmark on top of the pile.

Mick McCarthy has kicked off his second stint in charge of the national team with two 1-0 victories over Gibraltar and Georgia putting his side top of Group D two points ahead of Switzerland, but it’s the Swiss who top the betting at 11/10 to qualify for the 2020 finals as group winners.

We rate Republic of Ireland’s chances of topping the group at an outside 9/2 however,

…with Denmark at 5/4 having scored three late goals against Switzerland to draw their thrilling opener in Basel.

With just two goals in their last six fixtures, the Irish are odds-on at 8/11 to be shut out by their Danish counterparts, and 11/2 to leave Copenhagen with what would be a priceless three points.

Preston North End striker Callum Robinson is the most likely of the Irish contingent to find the net at 4/1, with Sheffield United’s David McGoldrick at 9/2 to break his international goalscoring duck at the age of 31.

Republic of Ireland are odds-against at 21/20 to even find the net in Copenhagen but that hasn’t stopped some patriotic support for the Boys In Green however and with two straight victories in the bag, a third would be priceless for Mick McCarthy even at this stage.
