Robbie Power Opens Up On Recovery Process For An Injured Jockey

BoyleSports Horse Racing Ambassador Robbie Power has given us his insight into what it is like behind the scenes as a jockey returning from injury.

One of the racing’s top jockeys Nico de Boinville is set to return to competitive action this weekend and Power, speaking to our Brian O’Keeffe, has opened up on his experience of getting himself right both mentally and physically to ride again after injury.

Brian: So obviously Nico de Boinville is back in action this weekend aboard Shishkin after spelling the sidelines. Can you talk to us a little bit about the kind of mental and physical road back from injury?

Race Riding The Only Way To Get 100% Fit

Robbie Power: The mental road is pretty straightforward because he’s coming back to ride Shishkin so you don’t need any more encouragement than coming back to ride a horse like that. Physically you do as much work as you can to get yourself fit.

I’m sure Nico’s in the gym an awful lot and clocking up the miles on the treadmill or on the road or whatever, running. But there’s only one way to get 100% fit and that’s by race riding.

Look he’s an experienced jockey, Nico, he’s been around a good while and a top class jockey on the big day, so he’ll know he’ll have himself 100% fit.

As I say the motivation was coming back to ride horses, I had to rush back from injury to ride Sizing John when he won the Irish Gold Cup and the motivation was Sizing John, you know, you don’t need any more motivation than that and it’s getting yourself as physically fit as you can.
