The event was being held for the first time since 2019 following the cancellation of the last two instalments due to the pandemic, and Rachel’s victory marked Westmeath’s first ever Rose of Tralee victory since the festival started back in 1959.
The Rosemount girl graduated last year with a BA in Drama and Spanish, and is due to return to university to complete a Master’s degree to become an English and Spanish teacher.
There were very few clues in the run up to the event as Rachel had been chalked up among the outsiders when BoyleSports opened betting at a remote 50/1.
However, some local support meant Rachel went on stage as a 33/1 shot to follow Limerick’s Sinéad Flanagan onto the winners’ roster, so her homecoming will certainly be welcomed by those who were happy to snap up the generous odds.
Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “Kerry’s Édaein O’Connell and Texas Rose Arden Stringer were all the rage before the start, so it’s fair to say we didn’t see the winner coming.
“There were a handful of bets placed on Rachel from Westmeath locals at 50/1, so fair play to them and we hope they are still celebrating!”
