Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ Favourite For Best Picture Oscar

Martin Scorsese could be in line to direct another Oscar-winning picture as ‘The Irishman’ was made joint favourite to scoop the coveted accolade at next year’s Academy Awards.

The first trailer from Scorsese’s highly anticipated mob film was revealed this week as its premiere was confirmed for the New York Film Festival in September, with a stellar cast including Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel set to hit the red carpet.

The revered filmmaker, who has previously picked up a best director Oscar for ‘The Departed’ which also won ‘Best Picture’, has had two movies nominated in the Best Picture category without success,

but The Irishman is now a 5/1 shot to win the statuette at the 92nd Academy Awards bash in Los Angeles next February.

That puts it as joint favourite alongside ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’, Quentin Tarantino’s comedy-drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, set to hit cinema screens in the UK and Ireland next month.

Others under early consideration for the award are British-American political thriller ‘The Last Thing He Wanted’ (8/1), A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood (9/1) starring Tom Hanks and the Sam Mendes WW1 drama 1917 (16/1).
