Shamrock Rovers v Dundalk Preview
Shamrock Rovers’ Form
Shamrock Rovers have dominated Irish Football since their 2020 Premier Division victory winning 4 titles in a row so it’s no surprise that they have been installed as 8/11 favourites to land the Premier Division for the 5th successive season
It was always going to be an interesting off-season for manager Stephen Bradley to see how he’d freshen up the squad for another crack at a league title. They’ve built their squad shrewdly with Poom, Kenny and Clarke returning and the likes of Honohan, McEneff and Burns coming in the experienced departures of Gannon, Finn and Mannus should be well covered.
The strength of this Rovers side was demonstrated in their President’s Cup victory against St Patrick’s Athletic last Friday Night even with several stars missing like Byrne and Kenny, they still had a comprehensive 3-1 victory as they stamped down their early-season marker.

Dundalk’s Form
Dundalk are the last side not named “Shamrock Rovers” to win the Premier Division, following their 7-year period of dominance where they won 5 league titles and finished runner-up 2 times between 2013 and 2019. However, what followed the departure of Kenny was a doldrum period for the club where they lost their star performers and suffered from poor management decisions off the field.
Having missed out on Europe last season, their off-season squad reshuffle was always going to prove difficult but what followed has been a mass exodus at Oriel with Hoban and Kelly departing for Derry, Sloggett off to England and Ward and Martin signing for Shelbourne amongst others.
Their recruitment is largely untried and tested at League of Ireland level but with Keane from UCD, Mahon from Motherwell and a handful of loans from the UK there is a tinge of excitement about some of them albeit with a huge amount of unpredictability.
Dundalk are very much an unknown quantity as we head into the new League of Ireland season but I get the sense that they’ll require a few more weeks of their new signings embedding into the squad before we get a true reflection of how promising their season could or could not be.

Key Players To Watch
Darragh Burns – Shamrock Rovers
The former St Patrick’s Athletic star is back in the League of Ireland following an unsuccessful period with MK Dons and he will have a point to prove that he still has the technical ability and talent to bounce back. Competition for places will be tight but I’m expecting him to have a major season.
Archie Davies – Dundalk
Arguably the best RB in the League, Archie was one of the few bright points for Dundalk last season which prompted speculation that he could make the switch abroad or even to Shamrock Rovers. But he is back for another season and will be looking to build on his assist tally of 7 from last season.
Shamrock Rovers v Dundalk Prediction & Best Bet
Prediction: Shamrock Rovers 3-1 Dundalk
Shamrock Rovers might have been missing some of their biggest stars last Friday Night, but their victory shows the strength in depth the squad currently possesses as they look to win another league title.
Dundalk in comparison are very much unknown quantities, which could work in their favour but I believe they might need a few weeks in for their squad to settle properly.
Shamrock Rovers to win and both teams to score looks to be the best bet for me.
Best Bet: Shamrock Rovers Win + BTTS @ 21/10
