The Form – Spain Women v Sweden Women

Spain’s Form

Spain got off to a lightning fast start at the 2023 Women’s World Cup with an opening 3-0 victory over Costa Rica that was followed up by a convincing 5-0 win against Zambia.

La Roja were well on their way to securing top spot in their group with only Japan standing in their way in the final group game. The Japanese stunned the Spaniards that day with their deadly counter attacking putting them up 3-0 at half-time. They would add another after the break to secure a 4-0 win and top the group table.

That defeat meant that Spain were handed the assignment of facing Switzerland in the Round of 16. They made light work of the Swiss with four first-half goals as they eventually ran out 5-1 winners to advance to the quarter-finals.

2019 Women’s World Cup finalists the Netherlands awaited them in the final. This was expected to be a tightly contested game and that’s exactly how it played out. Spain took the lead late on but the Dutch answered in stoppage time to force extra-time.

In the end, it was a goal in the 111th minute that would prove decisive as Salma Celeste Paralluelo Ayingono created space for a shot with a beautiful dummy before powering the ball home off the inside of the post.

Sweden’s Form

Sweden got off to a slow start at this year’s Women’s World Cup. In the opening game they went 1-0 behind against South Africa. They needed two second-half goals, including a 90th minute winner, to get over the line that day.

However, they would soon put things right in their second game of the tournament against Italy. The Italians proved no match for the Swedes as three opening half goals allowed them to cruise to a 5-0 victory and give them command of the group.

Their final group game came against Argentina. They took care of business that day 2-0 although the opener didn’t arrive until the 66th minute as they struggled to create clear cut chances.

The reward for winning the group was a Round of 16 tie with defending champions the USA. Although the USWNT went into this tournament as favourites they were very poor in making it to this stage. Sweden could only manage one shot on target but were able to hold out and force penalties as it was 0-0 after 120 minutes. The Swedes pulled off the upset winning 5-4 from the resulting spot kicks.

A heavily fancied Japan outfit were next up in the quarter-finals. Many were tipping the Japanese to win the competition but Sweden stunned them with goals either side of the half-time break. Japan scored late on but they couldn’t get the all important equaliser as Sweden advanced to the semi-final.

Spain v Sweden Women Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Spain 2-1 Sweden

I fancy Spain in this one. They are the Women’s World Cup favourites for a reason and aside from one blip against Japan they have been the most impressive team in this tournament.

Best Bet: Spain to win @ 20/21
