Support For An England v Germany Stalemate

Another penalty shootout is on the cards according to the early betting for England’s Euro 2020 last 16 showdown with Germany next Tuesday.

After a night of drama in Group F, with both final group stage matches finished 2-2 as Leon Goretzka’s late equaliser against Hungary in Munich teed up an eighth major tournament meeting between the old enemies.

Gareth Southgate will be keen to banish memories of his penalty miss 25 years ago which saw the Germans proceed to the final, but both major tournament meetings between the pair at Wembley have finished as draws after 90 minutes

and the chances of Tuesday’s encounter going to extra time have already been clipped into 21/10 from 5/2.

Both sides were chalked up at 9/1 to reach the quarter-finals via a penalty shootout but both England and Germany are now 17/2 to win on penalties, while England have been given the edge at 6/4 to Germany’s 15/8 if there is to be a winner in normal time.

Raheem Sterling has notched England’s two goals at the tournament so far and at 7/1 from 15/2 he is the early punter’s pick to open the scoring, but support for Harry Kane to open his account is thin on the ground so far, seeing his chances of a goal in normal time eased to 6/4 from 11/10.

The winners of Tuesday’s match will be rewarded with a quarter-final tie with either Sweden or Ukraine and England have been cut back into 13/2 from 8/1 to go all the way in the tournament since the last 16 line-up was confirmed on Wednesday evening.
