The Masters 2023 Preview – Betting Favourites

Rory Mcllroy – The Masters Favourite @ 6/1

The World Number three and now favourite for the 2023 Masters comes into Augusta looking to finally land that fourth elusive major and complete the career Grand Slam!

The Northern Irishman has had mixed success at the competition including in recent years coming tied 21st in 2019, tied 5th in 2020, missing the cut in 2021 and coming 2nd in 2022. From his 5 starts in 2023, he has 1 win and 1 2nd place finish.

Last time for Rory he missed the cut at The Players Championship with a very disappointing opening two days which saw him finish with a score of +5. Rory’s last victory came back in January at the Dubai Desert Classic when he beat out Patrick Reed in what was a highly anticipated matchup between two golfers that have plenty of bad blood between them.

Can Rory finally win The Masters and complete a richly deserved career Grand Slam? McIlroy is currently priced at 8/1 to do just that!

We recently did a deep dive into Rory McIlroy’s chances at the 2023 Masters which previews what we know and can expect from the talented Northern Irishman this year at Augusta National.

Scottie Scheffler – 13/2

Defending champion Scottie Scheffler enters the Masters as World Number one, defending champion and the second favourite for this year’s tournament. The 2022 PGA Tour Player of the Year has continued his strong vein of form into the 2023 season from 9 starts he has placed 8 times in the top 25, 6 times in the top 10, 1 third and 2 wins. Form lines don’t reach much better than that.

His most recent victory came in the acclaimed “fifth major” the Players Championship only two weeks ago. The Masters is a competition where strong/winning form in Augusta often repeats itself and where course form seems to be more important than on any other golf course.

Every year we seem to see some of the same names towards the top of the leaderboard at Augusta and with the consistency that Scottie is showing 7/1 could be a great price.

Jon Rahm – 8/1

The World Number two and third favourite in the betting market for the 2023 Masters is Jon Rahm. In previous outings in Augusta he has come tied for 9th in 2019, tied for 7th in 2020, tied for 5th in 2021 and tied for 27th in 2022. Three top tens from his last four starts shows some great course form at Augusta which would allow you to forgive his 27th place finish last year.

Rahm also comes into this competition in strong recent form with 6 top-25 finishes and 3 victories from his 8 starts in 2023. He most recently withdrew before the second round of The Players through illness which meant he relinquished his spot as World Number one to Scottie Scheffler.

The Spaniard’s last victory came Genesis Open back in February where a score of -17 was enough to beat next best in the field Max Home by two shots. Jon Rahm is 8/1 to finally land his first Masters title.

Jordan Spieth – 14/1

Third in the betting to win the 2023 Masters tournament is Jordan Spieth. This might be a slight surprise to some given that Jordan is currently only ranked 14th in the world and 38th in the FedEx Money List.

This is because he hasn’t been in his best form of late. From his 9 starts in 2023 he has only 5 Top 25 finishes and 3 Top 10s with no wins. In recent Masters outings, the 2015 Winner has not had a good time having finished tied for 21st in 2019, tied for 46th in 2020, and being cut in 2022.

However, mixed in with those poor results was a T3 finish at this event in 2021 which seems to show that he can capture that previous form that saw him almost secure two green jackets, although consistency is certainly not the word you’d use to describe Spieth.

Is he just not the player he once was or can Augusta National bring out the best in him again? Augusta form does tend to repeat and although it’s 8 years since his victory in 2015 do not rule Spieth out of winning again in 2023 and at 14/1 he could be worth a punt.

Cameron Smith – 18/1

Fifth in the Masters 2023 betting market is World Number five Cameron Smith who won his first major, The Open Championship, last July. It was announced at the end of August he had joined LIV Golf, coming 4th in his first start in Boston and winning his second start.

The Aussie would win over $5 million from his 4 starts on LIV Golf. Despite LIV tour golfers being banned from the PGA Tour, Augusta officials announced back in December that golfers who qualified for the Masters tournament based on its previous criteria will be eligible to play in April 2023 so he will receive a tournament invitation.

The Open Champion’s Masters form is strong despite coming tied for 51st in 2019, since then he has placed tied for 2nd in 2020, tied for 10th in 2021 and tied for 3rd in 2022. Based on Cameron Smith’s recent outings at Augusta odds of 18/1 could be a steal.
