Top Goalscoring Premier League Defenders Ever

Branislav Ivanovic’s header against PSG on Tuesday night was an impressive fifth goal of the season for the free-scoring defender.

The Serbian has notched nineteen Premier League goals during his time at Chelsea, which still leaves him behind the top flight’s all-time goalscoring defenders.

David Unsworth
The first name on a Fantasy Football team sheet in his day, Unsworth ended a 15-year career in the Premier League with 38 goals to his name.

The vast majority came for Everton, where he was designated penalty-taker. He only ever missed one spot-kick for the Toffees, and he converted that one from the rebound.

He also scored Premier League goals for West Ham, Portsmouth and Wigan – for whom his only goal below, from the spot of course, kept them up in 2007.

John Terry
Ivanovic isn’t the only goalscoring threat in the Chelsea defence, with captain John Terry contributing three league goals so far this term.

This brings his overall tally to 37, impressive for a player who’s not exactly renowned for his penalty prowess.

Incredibly, the former England skipper has now scored more career goals than the likes of Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta, and should break Unsworth’s record this season.

Ian Harte
The Irishman is still plying his trade in the Championship for high-flying Bournemouth, although his goalscoring exploits seem to have dried up with Eddie Howe’s side.

However, the left-back notched 28 top flight goals in nine seasons at Leeds United, where his dead-ball expertise was a key factor in their relative success under David O’Leary.

He did score ten from the spot, but he was also a free-kick specialist for both club and country – and a typical 25-yard set piece against Arsenal helped Leeds avoid relegation in 2003.

William Gallas
A surprise inclusion, the Frenchman scored 25 times during his league career with Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham – none of which were penalties.

Despite scoring some crucial goals at Stamford Bridge, the versatile defender may be best remembered for threatening to score past his own keeper is he wasn’t allowed a move to the Gunners.

However, this last-minute winner against Spurs in 2006 saved Chelsea from throwing away the title.

Leighton Baines
The former West Ham hardman Julian Dicks is edged out by Everton’s Leighton Baines by two goals for a place in our top five.

Former Newcastle United and Everton defender Steve Watson is only one goal shy of Baines’ total of 27 goals, but scored many of those from midfield.

About two-third of the left-backs strikes have been from the spot but, like Harte, the majority of the remainder have come from free-kicks like these two against West Ham.
