UFC 289 Picks & Predictions

Amanda Nunes (c) vs. Irene Aldana

Fighter Records

Amanda Nunes (c) 22-5 | Irene Aldana 14-6

Form

UFC Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes (35) returned to winning ways last time in The Octagon winning back her title by beating Julianna Peña by Unanimous Decision at UFC 277 back in July of last year.

Nunes had defeated Peña for the title the previous December at UFC 269. The Brazilian is without a doubt not just one of the finest female fighters, but the finest fighter full-stop in the company’s history. Before her last defeat she had an eleven-fight winning run which included beating some of the greats like Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey, Cris Cyborg and Holly Holm.

Irene Aldana (35) is #5 in the UFC women’s bantamweight rankings and is on a two-fight winning streak with her most recent victory coming at UFC 279 back in September. Aldana faced Macy Chiasson on that occasion where she won via KO (up kick to the body) when fighting a catchweight of 140lbs. She earned Performance of the Night for that effort.

Aldana’s last defeat came against Holly Holm via unanimous decision back in October 2020.

Fighting styles

Nunes: Striker | Aldana: Striker

Fight Analysis

This fight matches up two strikers. Nunes, who has had 13/22 victories coming via knockout, while Aldana has had 8/14 victories via knockout. However, Nunes is a much classier fighter and has more experience in the octagon against quality fighters.

Aldana’s best chance here could be to catch Nunes early in the fight and go for a shock early stoppage. In reality, I cannot see that happening and Nunes should finish this fight early.

Prediction: Amanda Nunes by KO, TKO or Disqualification @ 11/8

Charles Oliveira vs Beneil Dariush

Fighter Records

Charles Oliveira: 33-1-9|  Beneil Dariush: 22-4-1

Form

Charles Oliveira (33) may be a year younger than his opponent, but he has 16 more professional fights having started in the UFC back in 2010! Last time out he fought for the UFC Lightweight Championship but lost via Submission (arm-triangle choke) to Islam Makhachev at UFC 280. That victory ended a ten-fight winning run going back to UFC 225 in June 2018.

Beneil Dariush (34) is on an eight-fight winning streak which started back in November 2018 when he defeated Thiago Moisés via unanimous Decision. Along the way in this run, he has earned performance of the night three times, the fight of the night and a Decision victory over Tony Ferguson.

Fighting styles

Oliveira: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu | Dariush: Striker

Fight Analysis

Here you have two contrasting styles with Oliveira likely to want to take the fight to the floor given 21/33 of his victories have come via submission. Dariush on the other hand is a striker with 14/22 wins coming via knockout or decision.

Whoever gets to stamp their authority in the ring for the fight will be the likely victor but this is incredibly close. I can see this going the distance one way or another which may favour Dariush but the experience of Oliveira I think will prove key late on.

Prediction: Charles Oliveira By Submission @ 4/1

Mike Malott vs Adam Fugitt

Fighter Records

Mike Malott: 9-1-1 | Adam Fugitt: 9-0-3

Form

Malott is on a five-fight winning streak which makes him one of the hottest welterweights around right now and in the conversation as one of the best prospects in the division. The Canadian has a 100% 2/2 finish rate in the UFC. He most recently knocked out Yohan Lainesse in February via a round 1 submission.

Fugitt joined the UFC last summer and was defeated in his first fight by Michael Morales before rebounding in March with a first-round finish over Yusaku Kinoshita.

Fighting styles

Malott: Mixed| Fugitt: Freestyle

Fight Analysis

Mike Mallott can win this fight both ways whether that be his striking or his ground game. The latter of which has been described as one of the best around. Proof of that is his averages of 1.27 submissions and 1.91 takedowns per 15 minutes in the octagon.

Fugitt lacks the ground game for Malott but is an excellent striker with a significant striking volume of 5.4 per minute.

I think Mallott is the better all-round fighter on paper though and should win this one.

Prediction: Mike Mallott by Submission @ 9/4
