Ex-Hammer On West Ham, UECL, Declan Rice & Gianluca Scammaca

It’s been a difficult start to the Premier League season for West Ham while also featuring in the UEFA Conference League.

Former defender Glen Johnson spoke briefly to us about the Hammers. What do you make of his opinions below?

Johnson also spoke about Liverpool and Chelsea, which you can read on our blog HERE.

UNEXPECTED START IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE

West Ham need to get back to basics, the reason they were so good last year is everyone knew their roles, they didn’t change too many players in the starting XI, but they needed new players.

They did well in the market in bringing new players, but sometimes it takes a while for the squad to settle when there are so many new faces. They should have slowly dripped new players in.

PLAYING IN THE UECL – A DISTRACTION?

It’s certainly a lot of games, it can be. Some people used to hope they missed out on the Europa League because of how many games it adds on, it is a hindrance, but only if you don’t have the squad to handle it.

West Ham need to improve considerably if they want to reach the final. I think they’ll make it to the quarters or the semi-finals on current form.

DECLAN RICE

Rice is certainly the main man. The team would weaken considerably if he wasn’t there, but he’s not a great striker or solid centre half, he’s a key cog in the team’s performances.

For them to get results, he can’t do it on his own, he can’t turn up with a couple of goals, it’s not his game, but he is the main man.

SCAMMACA AND ANTONIO UP FRONT WORKING TOGETHER

Michail Antonio is not a technically good striker but will always work his socks off. Gianluca Scammaca has that class in front of goal.

All strikers want to be the main man, no one wants to sit on the bench one week and start the next continuously. It’s important for a striker’s flair and flow to play week in and week out.

David Moyes will need to decide how they want to play, whether it’s a technical game or a game where West Ham have to press from the front, that’s what the two players offer.
