2023/24 NBA Championship Betting Favourites
Milwaukee Bucks
Odds
The favourites to win the 2023/24 NBA Championship are the Milwaukee Bucks at odds of 7/2. Those odds imply that the Bucks have a 22.2% chance of winning the NBA Championship this season.
Previous Season Performance
Milwaukee had a 58-24 record in last year’s regular season. That mark was good enough for the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Their regular season performance and Championship pedigree meant that the Bucks were heavily fancied going into the Playoffs.
Unfortunately for the Bucks, they were dumped from the Playoffs in the first round by Miami, a team that has had their number before. The nature of the 4-1 series loss was shocking although you could argue that an injury to superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo completely changed the series.
Offseason Moves
The big news for the Bucks this offseason, and indeed in the entire NBA, was the acquisition of superstar PG Damian Lillard from Portland via trade. They lost G Jrue Holiday in the trade, whose defensive skills will be missed. However, the addition of Lillard will add a new dimension to this offence, spacing the floor which will in turn give Giannis more space in the paint to attack the basket.
Verdict
The Bucks are worthy NBA Championship favourites after the addition of Dame Lillard. They have the best two-man game in the NBA and if they stay healthy they will be hard to beat come playoff time.
Milwaukee also have the benefit of an easier road to the Finals given that the East is expected to be weaker than the West this year.
Denver Nuggets
Odds
The Denver Nuggets are one of two co-second favourites to win the 2023/24 NBA Championship at odds of 9/2. Those odds imply that the Nuggets have an 18.2% chance of winning this season’s NBA Championship.
Previous Season Performance
The Denver Nuggets are the defending NBA Champions after a completely dominant playoff run where they went 16-4 on their way to hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy.
Not only were the Nuggets impressive in the postseason but they were also consistent throughout the regular season on their way to a 53-29 record which was good enough for the Western Conference #1 seed.
2x MVP Nikola Jokic may not have won the MVP last season for a third consecutive year but he proved that he is indeed the best player in the NBA. His passing vision and execution is Magic Johnson-esque.
Offseason Moves
It was a pretty quiet offseason for the Nuggets after winning the NBA title. They did re-sign PG Reggie Jackson who is a good rotation player that can conduct the offense in relief of Jamal Murray.
Verdict
The Nuggets are the NBA Champions and I expect them to be the best team in the league again this season. They are second favourites behind the Bucks but I think that’s more to do with how stacked the Western Conference is this year compared to the East.
I could see Denver taking their foot off the pedal in the regular season after last year’s title so you might be able to get better odds on them during the season as opposed to right now.
As long as Jokic, Murray and (to a lesser extent) Aaron Gordon stay healthy Denver will be the team to beat again in the Playoffs.
Boston Celtics
Odds
The other co-second favourite to win the 2023/24 NBA Championship is the Boston Celtics who are also 9/2 to lift the Larry O’Brien trophy at the end of this season. Those odds of 9/2 imply that the Celtics have an 18.2% chance of winning this year’s NBA title.
Offseason Moves
It was a busy offseason for the Boston Celtics. Starting PG Marcus Smart was traded away as part of a deal for F Kristaps Porzingis. The 7’ 2” big man is a fascinating addition to the team. He hasn’t lived up to the hype that surrounded him when he came into the league, but the talent is clearly there.
C/PF Robert Williams along with G Malcolm Brogdon also departed as part of a trade package for PG Jrue Holiday. The addition of Holiday to this team is what Boston fans will be hoping finally gets them over the top after recent deep postseason runs.
Star SF Jaylen Brown also received a massive contract extension to the tune of $304 million over 5 years, the richest deal in NBA history.
Verdict
The Celtics lost some of their depth after trading for Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis but their new starting 5 is so good that the trade-off should be worth it.
I think this Celtics team will finish the regular season as the #1 seed in the East thanks to their new-look starting lineup.
I have my doubts about them come playoff time, however. It could be another second-round/ Conference Finals exit for Boston unless Jaylen Brown can raise his level of play in the playoffs to match his massive contract extension.
Phoenix Suns
Odds
Next up in the betting to be crowned 2023/24 NBA Champions are the Phoenix Suns at odds of 7/1. Those odds of 7/1 imply that the Suns have a 12.5% chance of winning this season’s NBA Championship.
Los Angeles Lakers
Odds
The LA Lakers are a 12/1 shot to win their first NBA title since 2020. Those odds of 12/1 imply that the Lakers have a 7.7% chance of lifting the Larry O’Brien trophy at the end of this season.
