Celtic v Atlético Madrid Preview

Celtic’s Form

Celtic came into this season coming off not only another SPL Title victory but by extension a historic treble under Ange Postecoglou, but he has since gone on to pastures new at Tottenham.

The only stain in their form book had been their elimination in the Champions League group stages. Celtic finished bottom with just two points showing the gulf in class at this level between them and the European elite. This competition has been their Achilles heel for some time now.

Brendan Rodgers has returned to the club and while domestic success has been aplenty for him at this club along with after him. The reality remains that the Celtic faithful would sacrifice one of their domestic cups to get out of the Champions League groups.

During the summer several changes were made by Rodgers in the squad with ten signings including Nat Philips, on loan from Liverpool. However, the loss of Jota to Al-Ittihad will prove very difficult to replace.

Last season’s SPL winners Celtic have started their league title defence in imperious fashion, 25 points in their opening 9 games mean they already lead the league by eight points. However, they’re yet to land their first point in the Champions League this season having lost 2-0 against Feyenoord and 1-2 against Lazio in their opening two matches.

They will have hope for this fixture with home advantage and coming off the back of a resounding 1-4 win against Hearts on Sunday.

Atlético Madrid’s Form

Simeone’s side are looking to improve on their performances in this competition last season where they were eliminated at the Group Stage after finishing bottom of a group which was more than winnable with Porto, Club Brugge and Bayer Leverkusen. However, things have been a lot better this season.

Despite a disappointing 1-1 draw against Lazio where they conceded a 95th minute equaliser, their 3-2 win over Feyenoord means they lead Group E.

During the summer, Atletico  were a few notable departures: Renan Lodo signed for Marseille for €14.00m, the expiration of Reguilón’s loan and the recent transfer of Carrasco to Saudi side Al Shabab for €15.00m were the biggest losses.

Atletico have recruited experience from the Premier League and three players from around La Liga, but this club is more about the system and the man in the dugout, and I’d entrust his judgement over signing any potential hidden gems.

Atletico have had a strong start to their league season with twenty-two points from their opening nine games, they currently lie fourth in La Liga two points behind Barcelona in third and three behind Girona and Real Madrid. However, Atlético have a game in hand over their immediate rivals

At the weekend it was the Griezmann show where he scored a hat trick to give them a comfortable 0-3 victory against Celta Vigo.

Celtic v Athlético Madrid Head-to-Head Results

Celtic and Atlético have only faced off twice in recent history both coming in the Europa League back in 2011.

Atlético were winners on both occasions, winning the first tie 2-0 at home before winning the second game 0-1 at Celtic Park.

Celtic v Atlético Madrid Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Celtic 0-2 Atlético Madrid

Celtic can consider themselves unlucky not to have won even a sole point from their opening games against Feyenoord and Lazio, but that’s the ruthless difference in quality that they aren’t used to compared with their SPL dominance.

Even with home advantage, this is likely to be their toughest test yet in the group.

Atlético have put their poor last season in Europe behind them and a victory in this one would put them in a commanding position of qualification early in the group stage. Furthermore, their form in La Liga suggests that they’ve more than enough about them to do the job here comfortably.

Best Bet: Atlético Madrid -1 @ 5/2
