2023 Grand National Runners And Riders

Check out all the 2023 Grand National runners and riders as the final field of 40 horses has been announced for the world’s most famous race.

Aintree Grand National Runners and Riders

No.1 Any Second Now

Trainer: Ted Walsh

Jockey: Mark Walsh

Weight: 11st12lbs

BHA Rating: 167

Odds: 14/1

The course specialist has already had a 2nd and 3rd finish in this event. Might find it hard going this year as he carries top weight.

No. 2 Noble Yeats

Trainer: Emmet Mullins

Jockey: Sean Bowen

Weight: 11st11lbs

BHA Rating: 166

Odds: 11/1

Last year’s 50/1 Grand National winner is a long way from that big price this year as he has been priced up among the favourites to defend his crown.

No.3 Galvin

Trainer: Gordon Elliot

Jockey: Davy Russell

Weight: 11st6lbs

BHA Rating: 166

Odds: 20/1

Not been in as consistent form this season after great form in 2022, Galvin showed promise in the Cross-Country race at Cheltenham.

No. 4 Fury Road

Trainer: Gordon Elliot

Jockey: Jonjo O’Neil JR

Weightt: 11st6bs

BHA Rating: 161

Odds: 40/1

He tested a certain Galopin Des Champs in the Irish Gold Cup and sixth in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham – this horse is no pushover.

No. 5 The Big Dog

Trainer: Peter Fahey

Jockey: Aidan Coleman

Weight: 11st5lbs

BHA Rating: 160

Odds: 12/1

Came third in the Welsh National at Christmas and followed it up with a great run in the Irish Gold Cup before falling in February. This horse likes soft ground.

No. 6 Capodanno

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Jockey: Danny Mullins

Weight: 11st5lbs

BHA Rating: 160

Odds: 18/1

Coming into this race with a similar profile to last year’s winner Noble Yeats, he started late this season due to injury and ideally would have more racing under his belt but don’t rule out the Mullins duo and Capodanno here.

No. 7 Delta Work

Trainer: Gordon Elliot

Jockey: Keith Donoghue

Weight: 11st4lbs

BHA Rating: 159

Odds: 9/1

The two-time Cross Country winner at Cheltenham was a well-beaten third last year when carrying less weight than this time around. Delta Work is a true mudder so connections would be happy to see plenty of rainfall prior to this year’s Grand National.

No 8. Sam Brown

Trainer: Anthony Honeyball

Jockey: Jonathan Burke

Weight: 11st4lbs

BHA Rating: 159

Odds: 66/1

Won at Aintree last April in a 3-mile 1-furlong trip but not over the Grand National fences. Followed this course win up with a fifth place finish (out of six runners) at next Aintree appearance in December. The long odds are a fair reflection of his chances.

No. 9 Lifetime Ambition

Trainer: Jessica Harrington

Jockey: Sean O’Keefe

Weight: 11st3lbs

BHA Rating: 158

Odds: 33/1

Trainer Jessica Harrington, who is being treated for breast cancer currently, has won the lot except the Grand National. A winner for Lifetime Ambition would be exactly that for Jessica.

No 10. Carefully Selected

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Jockey: Michael O’Sullivan

Weight: 11st11lbs

BHA Rating: 156

Odds: 50/1

This lightly raced horse will be ridden by Michael O’Sullivan who had an excellent Cheltenham festival.

No 11. Coko Beach

Trainer: Gordon Elliot

Jockey: Harry Corden

Weight: 11st

BHA Rating: 155

Odds: 33/1

Has some level of form over this course and distance having come eighth in last year’s event, but Coko Beach still finished 66 lengths back from 2022 Grand National champion Noble Yeats.

No 12. Longhouse Poet

Trainer: Martin Brassil

Jockey: JJ Slevin

Weight: 11st

BHA Rating: 155

Odds: 18/1

A confidence building win at Down Royal last time out. Trainer Martin Brassil is no stranger to Grand National success either having trained 2006 champion Numbersixvalverde.

No 13. Gaillard Du Mesnil

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Jockey: Paul Townend

Weight: 11st

BHA Rating: 155

Odds: 12/1

A leading fancy under arguably the best jockey and trainer duo currently in racing. The horse came third in last year’s Irish Grand National and the Irish National usually provides a good indication for the next year’s Grand National. All the ingredients needed to cross the line first in Saturday’s big race.

No 14. Darasso

Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien

Jockey: LP Dempsey

Weight: 10st13lbs

BHA Rating: 154

Odds: 80/1

The O’Brien family are another team that have won basically everything but the Grand National. Darasso is unlikely to be the horse that does it for them as his long odds suggest.

No 15. Le Milos

Trainer: Dan Skelton

Jockey: Harry Skelton

Weight: 10st11lbs

BHA Rating: 152

Odds: 16/1

Second last time out at Kelso but won his last two outings over 3+ mile trips. This horse has a Coral Gold Cup to his name and is fancied by many to contend.

No 16. Escaria Ten

Trainer: Gordon Elliot

Jockey: AP Heskin

Weight: 10st10lb

BHA Rating: 151

Odds: 100/1

Ninth in the race last year 75 lengths back from the winner. Wouldn’t be the pick of Gordon Elliott’s horses going into this race.

No 17. The Big Breakaway

Trainer: Joe Tizzard

Jockey: Brendan Powell

Weight: 10st10lbs

BHA Rating: 151

Odds: 40/1

Is without a win in chase action but is trending in the right direction with a second place in the Welsh National. Pulled up at Cheltenham last time after a disappointing run which is a concern.

No 18. Cape Gentleman

Trainer: John Joseph O’Hanlon

Jockey: Judy McGarvey

Weight: 10st8lbs

BHA Rating: 151

Odds: 100/1

This horse has not lived up to earlier expectations. No signs that he has what it takes to cross the line first on Saturday.

No. 19 Roi Mage

Trainer: Patrick Griffin

Jockey: Felix De Giles

Weight: 10st8lbs

BHA Rating: 149

Odds: 33/1

This horse is the most experienced in the race which can’t be a bad thing going into a Grand National. Might suit him if the rain falls.

No. 20 Diol Ker

Trainer: Noel Meade

Jockey: Kieren Buckley

Weight: 10st8lbs

BHA Rating: 149

Odds: 80/1

Won the Leinster National last year although that was only over a three mile trip. Jumping will need to improve if he is to have a chance.

No. 21 A Wave Of The Sea

Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien

Jockey: Shane Fitzgerald

Weight: 10st6lb

BHA Rating: 147

Odds: 66/1

Not the world’s best jumper. Has a second and fourth place finish in the last two Munster Nationals to his credit. Little chance.

No. 22 Minella Trump

Trainer: Donald McCain

Jockey: Theo Gillard

Weight: 10st6lbs

BHA Rating: 147

Odds: 40/1

Has consistently run in small field races in recent years so will be interesting to see how he handles the field at the Grand National.

No. 23 Vanillier

Trainer: Gavin Gromwell

Jockey: Sean Flanagan

Weight: 10st6lbs

BHA Rating: 147

Odds: 16/1

Stays well but question marks over fences. If he can navigate the jumps then he has every chance.

No. 24 Velvet Elvis

Trainer: T Gibney

Jockey: Darragh O’Keefe

Weight: 10st6lb

BHA Rating: 147

Odds: 33/1

Showed that he can stay the trip after a sixth place finish at last year’s Irish Grand National. Form looks good coming into this race as he has impressed in his last two outings.

No. 25 Ain’t That A Shame

Trainer: Henry De Bromhead

Jockey: Rachel Blackmore

Weight: 10st5lb

BHA Rating: 146

Odds: 8/1

Has all the makings of a Grand National winning horse. Rachael Blackmore will give him the ride so odds sure to shorten closer to race time.

No. 26 Corach Rambler

Trainer: Lucinda Russell

Jockey: Derek Fox

Weight: 10st5lbs

BHA Rating: 146

Odds: 10/1

Was favourite for this race but has drifted out in the odds as the big day draws closer. Impressed last time out in a win at the Ultima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham.

No. 27 Enjoy D’allen

Trainer: Ciaran Murphy

Jockey: Simon Dorrens

Weight: 10st5bs

BHA Rating: 146

Odds: 33/1

Jumping isn’t his strength. Unseated his rider at the first fence in last year’s Grand National. Last win now over two years ago.

No. 28 Mr Incredible

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Jockey: Brian Hayes

Weight: 10st4lbs

BHA Rating: 145

Odds: 14/1

Fancied by many for this race. Decent jumper that ticks a lot of the boxes and running at a low weight.

No. 29 Mister Coffey

Trainer: Nicky Henderson

Jockey: Nico De Boinville

Weight: 10st4lb

BHA Rating: 145

Odds: 40/1

Still without a win over fences but has five second place finishes. Jumps well and could be an interesting longshot.

No. 30 Cloudy Glen

Trainer: Venita Williams

Jockey: Charlie Deutsch

Weight: 10st4lbs

BHA Rating: 145

Odds: 66/1

Ran well at Haydock’s Grand National Trial for a third placed finish. Unlikely to have the strong finished required to win this race.

No. 31 Hill Sixteen

Trainer: Sandy Thomson

Jockey: Ryan Mania

Weight: 10st2lbs

BHA Rating: 143

Odds: 66/1

Over two years without a victory. Unimpressive in last two outings.

No. 32 Gabbys Cross

Trainer: Henry De Bromhead

Jockey: Peter Carberry

Weight: 10st2lbs

BHA Rating: 143

Odds: 66/1

Won last July at Galway. Hasn’t shown the form since then that would suggest he has what it takes to win the National.

No. 33 Recite A Prayer

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Jockey: J B Foley

Weight: 10st11bs

BHA Rating: 142

Odds: 66/1

Far from the best Willie Mullins horse in this race. Ran poorly in his last two outings.

No. 34 Eva’s Oskar

Trainer: Tim Vaughan

Jockey: Alan Johns

Weight: 10st11lb

BHA Rating: 142

Odds: 50/1

Question marks over stamina which is not ideal coming into a Grand National.

No. 35 Our Power

Trainer: Sam Thomas

Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies

Weight: 10st

BHA Rating: 141

Odds: 20/1

The owner and trainer were involved in a helicopter crash a few months ago so a win here for Our Power would be quite the story. Two wins to his name this season and stays well. Every chance.

No. 36 Dunboyne

Trainer: Gordon Elliot

Jockey: Jack Tudor

Weight: 10st

BHA Rating: 141

Odds: 50/1

Will be racing with blinkers this time as opposed to the usual cheekpieces. Refused to race in November and a win here would be a surprise.

No. 37 Francky Du Berlais

Trainer: Peter Bowen

Jockey: Ben Jones

Weight: 10st

BHA Rating: 141

Odds: 100/1

Serious question marks around this horse’s stamina. Familiar with Aintree’s fences having had three trips over them although hasn’t showed any good course form in those outings.

No. 38 Fortescue

Trainer: Henry Daly

Jockey: Hugh Nugent

Weight: 9st13lbs

BHA Rating: 140

Odds: 66/1

Wet conditions would be ideal for this horse. Generally stays well but looked tired before unseating his rider in last year’s Grand National.

No. 39 Back On The Lash

Trainer: Martin Keighley

Jockey: Adam Wedge

Weight: 9st13lbs

BHA Rating: 140

Odds: 25/1

Doesn’t like soft ground so will be hoping it’s dry come race day. Could be one to keep an eye out for if the rain stays away.

No. 40 Born By The Sea

Trainer: Paul John Gilligan

Jockey: Philip Enright

Weight: 9st10lbs

BHA Rating: 137

Odds: 50/1

No form to suggest he has any chance here.
