2023 Grand Slam of Darts Favourites

Michael van Gerwen

Michael van Gerwen is a co-favourite to win the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts at odds of 4/1. Those odds imply that MVG has a 20% chance of winning this year’s tournament.

The “Green Machine” and three-time Grand Slam of Darts winner (2015, 2016, 2017) will be looking to go second outright on the all-time tournament table with another victory at this event (taking him one clear of Gerwyn Price but still two behind Taylor).

Van Gerwen has had another solid year in 2023. This season he has won the Premier League of Darts, World Series of Darts Finals, and runner-up in the PDC World Championship and UK Open all among his results in major events.

When MVG is at his best, few if anyone can touch him at the oche. He should be a major contender at the latter stages of this tournament again and improve on his 10-16 Quarter-Final defeat against Luke Humphries last year.

Michael van Gerwen was drawn in Group G where he is the 1/25 favourite to qualify.

(1) Michael Van Gerwen @ 1/25

(2)  Rob Cross @ 2/9

(3) Martijn Kleermaker @ 7/2

(4) Fallon Sherrock @ 4/1

Gerwyn Price

The other co-favourite to win the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts is Gerwyn Price at odds of 4/1. Those odds imply that Price has a 20% chance of winning the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts.

The “Iceman” like MVG is another three-time Grand Slam of Darts winner (2018, 2019, 2021) will be looking to go second outright on the all-time tournament table with another victory at this event (taking him one clear on Michael Van Gerwen but still two behind Taylor)

Price this season has won the PDC World Cup of Darts, been a finalist in the World Grand Prix and Premier League of Dars and had a Quarter-Final appearance at the PDC World Championship and European Championship.

Price will be looking to better his 16-13 Raymond van Barneveld Quarter-Final exit at this event last year and rightly enters the tournament as one of the market leaders.

Gerwyn Price was drawn in Group D where he is the 1/8 favourite to qualify.

(1) Gerwyn Price @ 1/8

(2) Ryan Searle @ 8/11

(3) Gian van Veen @ 8/13

(4) Nathan Rafferty @ 15/2

Luke Humphries

The third favourite to win the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts is Luke Humphries at odds of 6/1. Those odds imply that Humphries has a 14.3% chance of winning this tournament.

Cool Hand Luke’s best finish at the Grand Slam of Darts came last year when he lost in the Semi-Final 16-12 against Nathan Aspinall. However, that event performance was a sign of better things to come for Humphries.

This has been a brilliant season for Cool Hand Luke, culminating in his first major victory at the 2023 World Grand Prix. He has solely established himself as one of the best players on tour having reached the Semi-Final of the World Matchplay, World Series of Darts Finals and a Quarter-Final of the European Championship.

Despite his Semi-Final appearance last year, he failed to get out of the group in his previous two attempts. Humphries is a different player now and as a result, is a likely contender.

Luke Humphries was drawn in Group C where he is the second favourite to qualify.

(1) Luke Humphries @ 1/4

(2) Dirk van Duijvenbode @ 5/6

(3) Gary Anderson @ 2/9

(4) Steve Lennon @ 5/1

Michael Smith

Next up in the betting to win this year’s Grand Slam of Darts is Michael Smith at 10/1 in the betting. Those odds imply that Smith has a 9.1% chance of winning the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts.

Bully Boy achieved his darting destiny at the beginning of the season when he won the 2023 PDC World Championship after being a beaten finalist in 2019 and 2022.

However, Smith hasn’t won a major event since with his best results being a Semi-Final appearance in the World Grand Prix, Premier League of Darts, The Masters and a Quarter-Final in the World Cup of Darts.

He is coming into the event as defending champion following his 16-5 victory over Nathan Aspinall last year which turned out to be the catapult to his World Championship success.

Michael Smith was drawn in Group A where he is the favourite to qualify.

(1) Michael Smith @ 1/6

(2) James Wade @ 4/9

(3) Krzysztof Ratajski @ 8/11

(4) Nathan Girvan @ 9/1

Nathan Aspinall

Further out in the betting for the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts is Nathan Aspinall who is a 20/1 chance to win this tournament. Those odds imply that Nathan Aspinall has a 4.8% chance of winning this edition of the Grand Slam of Darts.

“The Asp” enters this event looking to go one better than his best-ever finish at the event last year when he was defeated by Michael Smith 16-5 in the final of the 2022 Grand Slam of Darts.

2023 has been a hit-and-miss year for Aspinall though. Having won the World Matchplay, beating Clayton in the final 18-6, he has disappointed otherwise at the major events. His next best finishes were a runner-up finish at the World Series of Darts Finals and a Quarter-Final of the UK Open to boost.

With that said, The Asp will be hungry for success this year to avenge his defeat and that could be just the catapult he needs going forward into the World Championship.

Nathan Aspinall was drawn in Group H where he is the favourite to qualify.

(1) Nathan Aspinall @ 4/11

(2) Damon Heta @ 4/9

(3) Ricardo Pietreczko @ 8/13

(4) Beau Greaves @ 11/2

Qualification

Qualification criteria is unchanged from the 2022 event.

The finalists from PDC televised events over 12 months will make up 16 places at this year’s Grand Slam, with six players currently qualifying through that route.

Masters champion Chris Dobey and UK Open champion Andrew Gilding are among the players to have won televised events so far during the qualifying period, while Rob Cross qualifies after being runner-up in the Players Championship Finals and Masters events.

The Premier League, World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, European Championship and World Series of Darts Finals provide further opportunities for players to seal their qualification through televised events.

If the 16 places are not filled from televised event winners and runners-up, winners from the 2023 PDC European Tour and then Players Championship events could also secure Grand Slam spots.

A further eight players will come through the PDC Tour Card Holder Qualifier on November 3, before the 32-player field is completed with an additional eight qualifiers.
