Paddy Power Gold Cup Betting Favourites

Stage Star

The favourite to win the 2023 Paddy Power Gold Cup is Stage Star at odds of 9/2. Those odds imply that Stage Star has an 18.2% chance of winning this year’s Paddy Power Gold Cup.

Stage Star is a Paul Nicholls-trained seven-year-old who is the son of Fame And Glory and Sparky May. His career record to date is 8 victories, 2 runner-up places and 1 third-place finish from 14 runs.

This gelding’s most recent outing on track was at Aintree back in April where he finished a disappointing last behind four other horses after multiple mistakes meant he finished fifteen lengths behind winner Banbridge.

That poor showing is an exception though and before that defeat, he had been victorious in three races on the spin. That culminated in a Turners’ Novice Chase success in Cheltenham back in March. On that occasion, Stage Star beat six other horses to come 3 1⁄4 lengths ahead of the closest challenger Notlongtillmay (who also runs in this race).

The Real Whacker

The joint second favourite for 2023 Paddy Power Gold Cup success is Unexpected Party at odds of 7/1. Those odds suggest that The Real Whacker has a 12.5% chance of winning the big race this Saturday at Cheltenham.

The seven-year-old is trained by Patrick Neville and is no stranger to success at Cheltenham having won the 2023 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase earlier this year.

The Real Whacker is the son of Mahler and Credit Box. He is another consistent scorer on track having won 4 times and finished runner-up 1 time from his 7 outings on track.

Interestingly, by the time the horse races on Saturday, it will be 248 days since the horse’s last excursion on track which was that Brown Advisory success at Cheltenham. So it will be interesting to know whether the break does the horse well or whether there will be rustiness at play on Saturday.

If the horse returns to full strength at the weekend, it could make a mockery of the 7/1 price.

Notlongtillmay

Another joint second favourite for this year’s Paddy Power Gold Cup is Notlongtillmay at 7/1. Those odds imply that Notlongtillmay has a 12.5% chance of winning this Saturday’s big race.

The seven-year-old is trained by L J Morgan and the son of Malinas and Tara Croft.

The gelding is coming into this race with a consistent record on track passing the winner’s podium 4 times, coming runner-up on 2 occasions and third one time from 9 races.

Notlongtillmay recently ran at Cheltenham at the end of October, returning from a 226-day break from the track. In that outing he came 4th in an eleven-horse field, 3.5 lengths back from winner Dancing On My Own. The run will have brought on the horse’s sharpness after a long absence from competitive racing.

Interestingly, before the break at Cheltenham back in March the horse came second in the Turners Novices Chase, 3.25 lengths behind race favourite in this one, Stage Star.

Notlongtillmay is 7/1 to avenge said defeat from March against Stage Star.

Unexpected Party

The third of three joint second favourites to win the 2023 Paddy Power Gold Cup is Unexpected Party, also a 7/1 chance in the betting. Those odds suggest that Unexpected Party has a 12.5% chance of winning the Paddy Power Gold Cup.

The Dan Skelton-trained eight-year-old is the son of Martaline and Reform Act. His career record to date is 3 victories, 5 runner-up finishes and 3 third-place finishes from 14 runs.

Unexpected Party returned to the track for the first time following a 175-day break at Chepstow back in October where he won a Novice Chase as part of a four-horse field, coming 2.75 lengths ahead of runner-up Knappers Hill. That break from the track proved to be the exact antidote the horse needed to win its first race since his win at Ascot back in January 2022.

Il Ridoto

Next up in the betting is Il Ridoto who is rated as an 8/1 chance. Those odds imply that Il Ridoto has an 11.1% chance of winning at Cheltenham this Saturday.

Il Ridoto is another trained by Paul Nicholls. The six-year-old gelding is the son of Kapgarde and L’Exploratrice.

His career record to date is two victories from four runs.

The horse most recently ran in The Aintree Grand National back in April but was disappointingly pulled up before the thirteenth fence which followed a sixth-place finish in Cheltenham the previous month.

The six-year-old was last victorious back in January at Cheltenham when beating fifteen other horses and coming one length ahead of closest challenger Fugitif (another challenger in this race) in a Handicap Chase.
