Ireland Six Nations Preview

The favourites for the 2023 Six Nations are Ireland at odds of 13/10. Ireland are deserving of their favouritism for this year’s tournament following an impressive 2022 which sees the team ranked number one in the world.

Head Coach Andy Farrell has had so much success with this squad since taking the reins in 2019 that anything other than another strong showing in this competition would be a surprise.

With the Rugby World Cup on the horizon in the autumn this Six Nations will not be measured solely by results but rather by performances. Getting one last look at some of the players on the margins of both the starting XV and the squad will also be a top priority.

Even though winning this Six Nations won’t be Ireland’s sole focus they still look to be the team to beat given the strength in the depth in this squad and a shrewd head coach.

Prediction: 2nd place finish @2/1

France Six Nations Preview

France are the second favourites to win the 2023 Six Nations at 7/4 odds. The French are the world’s #2 ranked team, just behind Ireland, due to their international success in the past calendar year.

They come into this Six Nations on a 13-game winning streak having beaten top-ranked teams like South Africa and Australia during the Autumn Internationals series.

In the 2022 Six Nations France were dominant as they completed a 10th Grand Slam. This makes them the defending champions ahead of this year’s competition.

Ireland might be the favourites for this tournament but with the talent that this France side possess don’t be surprised if they are the champions in a couple months time.

Prediction: Champions @ 15/8

5 France v Wales March 18th, 2.45pm Stade de France, Paris

England Six Nations Preview

The third favourites for the 2023 Six Nations are England at odds of 4/1. The English are currently in a transition phase having sacked their head coach of seven years Eddie Jones in December.

In 2022, they won only 5 of the 12 games they played, which tells us that they are probably not as consistent as they would need to be to win this year’s Six Nations.

While inconsistency is a real problem, England still have one of the most talented pool of rugby players to pick from in the world so they should never be counted out of beating the two favourites or even contending themselves.

This makes England the hardest team to predict in this 2023 Six Nations preview as they have the talent to beat any other team but the inconsistency to lose to a lot of teams that they are better than on paper.

Their results in the autumn series show this to be the case having drawn with New Zealand thanks to a spectacular comeback but falling to both South Africa and Argentina.

Prediction: 3rd place finish @ 15/8

Wales Six Nations Preview

Wales are the fourth favourites in the betting for the 2023 Six Nations at 14/1. It is rare to ever see the Welsh at such big odds to win this competition but that is the reality for this team given the current state of affairs.

This is another international side that are in a transition phase. They had mixed results in the Autumn Internationals. The lows included a 32-point loss to New Zealand at home and a shock defeat to Georgia while they did manage a win against Argentina and held Australia close but ultimately lost narrowly.

This current squad is a far cry from the one that came oh so close to booking a spot in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final when they pushed eventual winners South Africa all the way in the semi-final of that tournament.

The decision makers in Welsh rugby made the call to fire coach Wayne Pivac after the performances in the autumn. This sees a familiar face in Warren Gatland make a return as coach for Wales having had much success with the country in the past.

Gatland’s return is a boost for Wales but they have a lot of progress to make before they can be viewed as serious contenders for this Six Nations.

Prediction: 5th place finish @ 7/4

Scotland Six Nations Preview

Scotland are fifth in the betting to win the 2023 Six Nations at 22/1. The Scots were very impressive the last time we saw them back in November.

In the autumn they put Argentina to the sword in a dominant 23-point victory. On top of that, they pushed Australia to the brink before falling to a narrow defeat and also gave New Zealand a competitive game.

They might not have the same level of quality as France, Ireland and England but recent form suggests that they can compete with Europe’s top rugby nations.

Scotland’s head coach Gregor Townsend is under mounting pressure from the nation’s media so we can expect this team to target results in this year’s Six Nations rather than getting a look at players ahead of the World Cup like the top teams will be doing.

An emphasis on results could see Scotland challenge the likes of England and Wales for a top 3 spot in this tournament which would be seen as a successful campaign for the Scottish.

Prediction: 4th place finish @ 9/4

Italy Six Nations Preview

Italy are the biggest outsiders for the 2023 Six Nations at odds of 1000/1. Italy, the last nation in our 2023 Six Nations preview, look destined for yet another Six Nations Wooden Spoon as they will once again struggle to compete with the talent of the other five nations in this competition.

The Italians are getting better slowly but surely but the gap between themselves and the top teams is still there and blindingly obvious at times.

Evidence of Italy’s improvement in rugby union was their famous victory over Australia in the autumn. Perhaps this is an indication that they can be more competitive in this year’s Six Nations.

The Italians also beat Wales in last year’s Six Nations so the Wooden Spoon is no longer a foregone conclusion as it had been in past years.

Unfortunately, a last place finish is still the most likely outcome for this squad due to the sheer talent inequality between them and the other nations.

Prediction: Wooden Spoon @ 1/8
